Prenatal Period
  • From conception to birth, the rate of growth and
    development is very rapid
  • 40 weeks (9 months)
  • If the pace continued after birth

  • Three Stages in Prenatal Period

1. Germinal Stage
  • First two weeks after conception
  • Zygote is created through fertilization of egg
  • Zygote implants itself in uterine wall to begin
    growth process

2. Embryonic Stage
  • Two weeks through 2nd month
  • Now called an Embryo
  • Cell division is specialized
  • Most major birth defects happen in this stage

3. Fetal Stage
  • Two months through birth
  • Now called a fetus
  • Becomes capable of movement
  • At six months can usually survive premature birth.
