Evaporation
  • Heat energy from the sun causes water in puddles,
streams, rivers, seas, oceans or lakes to change
from a liquid to water vapor (a gas).
  • This is called evaporation.
  • The vapor rises into the air and collects in
    clouds.

5
Transpiration
  • Transpiration is the process by which plants lose
    water out of their leaves.
  • Transpiration gives evaporation a bit of a hand
in getting the water vapor back up into the air.

6
Condensation
  • As water vapor rises and cools, it collects
around dust particles (or condenses) and
    forms clouds.

This is called condensation.
7
Precipitation
  • When clouds are saturated gravity pulls the water
to the earth. Mainly as rain, but sometimes as
    snow, sleet, and hail.
  • This is called precipitation.

8
2 types of Run Off
  • Surface run off movement of water on Earths
surface to collect in rivers, streams, lakes and
    oceans.
  • Subsurface run off movement of water beneath the
Earths surface that eventually collects in
    aquifers and springs.

9
Accumulation
  • a.k.a. collection
  • Water collects in rivers, lakes, streams, and the
    ocean.

How is water distributed on the Earth?
  • 97 of the worlds Water supply is salt water
    (seas and oceans).
  • 2 of the worlds water supply is fresh and
    frozen in icecaps and glaciers.

16
How is water distributed on the Earth?
  • 0.5 of the worlds water supply is
non-consumable water on land, water in atmosphere
    or dirty water
  • 0.5 of the worlds water supply is freshwater
    available for consumption.(lakes, rivers,
    streams, groundwater)
