Title: The Review of the Archive of Lunar Graze Observations
1The Reviewof theArchive of Lunar Graze
Observations
- Presented at
- Trans Tasman Symposium on Occultations - 4
- (March 2010 Canberra Australia)
- and
- IOTA AGM
- (December 2010 Boston U.S.A.)
- By Dave Gault
- and on behalf of
- Dave Herald
2The Plan
- Merge all known collections of graze
observations. into one collection.
(RGO - Computer
Records, RGO Grazes (OCRd), Occult, ILOC,
Soma) - Occult Dave Herald developed tools and
functionality to handle the review. - and then
- Restore lost data for grazes pre 1974
(observers Unknown A, B,C,D ect).
Ken Coles at Indiana Univ. of
Pennsylvania has David Dunhams files he
collected while at USNO - Review and correct errors, syntax, mark
duplicated data and set invalid events. - Find previously unreported grazes and create new
reports to add to the archive.

5Restoring the pre 1974 dataViews of the work of
Ken Coles
- 85 of grazes before 1970 restored and reviewed
- 49 new previously unreported grazes now
incorporated in the archives
6Kaguya (Selene) Databecomes available
- 6 months into the review the Kaguya (Selene) data
becomes available for download - Dave Herald updated Occult to use Kaguya Data in
observed limb plots and predictions - This caused a re-review of all grazes already
processed

16Missing Graze Reports
- Lunar Eclipse graze of alpha Librae
- 5 expeditions of 35 observers at the southern
limit recorded 198 events! - Meanwhile
- 8 observers flew from the USA to Sudan to observe
at the northern limit. - No events in the archives and the reports are
still missing!
17Summary
- Total number of Grazes Reviewed 3618
- Total number of events considered 64989
- Number of new (previously unreported) grazes
found, reports created, double checked and merged
into the archive 193 - Hours invested in this project? dont ask! ?
