Title: 1 Pet. 3:1-6
11 Pet. 31-6
2CHASTE BEHAVIOR
(1 Pet. 31-6)
- 31 "In like manner, ye wives, be in subjection
to your own husbands that, even if any obey not
the word, they may without the word be gained by
the behavior of their wives 2 beholding your
chaste behavior coupled with fear." -
I. SUBJECTION - To submit, obey.
1. Needed throughout our lives (213, 18 31,
7).
2. Regardless of how others behave (1 Pet.
211-12, 18-19).
3. Provides a powerful influence (1 Pet.
212, 15, 24 31).
4. Subjection to God requires "clean,
innocent, modest, pure" behavior. (1 Jn 32-3)
3CHASTE BEHAVIOR
(1 Pet. 31-6)
- 33 "Whose adorning let it not be the outward
adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing
jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel 4 but
let it be the hidden man of the heart, in the
incorruptible apparel of a meek and quiet spirit,
which is in the sight of God of great price." -
II. DON'T EMPHASIZE THE OUTWARD
1. "Not - But" contrast.
2. Ostentatious, flamboyant, showy, brings
improper attention to self (Isa. 316-24).
3. Warning against vanity deceit (Prv. 3130).
4. Earthly treasures perish mislead
(Matt. 619-21 1 Jn. 215-17).
4CHASTE BEHAVIOR
(1 Pet. 31-6)
II. DON'T EMPHASIZE THE OUTWARD
5. "Costly apparel" (1 Tim. 29).
"Silk in its natural state clung to the female
form in a way that was infinitely more pleasing
to the eye than Parthian banners. But Roman
ladies did not stop at that. For one thing,
there was not enough pure silk to go around at
first. And, anyway, it was not sexy enough for
those freewheeling days. So they unraveled the
close woven Chinese fabric and rewove it into
flimsy gauze which left little to the
imagination." (East To Cathay The Silk
Road by Robert Collen, p. 44-46)
5CHASTE BEHAVIOR
(1 Pet. 31-6)
II. DON'T EMPHASIZE THE OUTWARD
5. "Costly apparel" (1 Tim. 29).
"I see clothes of silk, if clothes they can be
called, affording protection neither to the body
nor the modesty of the wearer, and which are
purchased for enormous sums, from unknown
people." (Seneca 4 BC - 65 AD)
Clement of Alexandria referred to silk fashions
as "fabrics foolishly thin" which "cannot conceal
the shame of the body". "For such clothing,
falling close to the body, takes its form more
easily, and adhering as it were to the flesh,
receives its shape, and marks out the woman's
figure, so that the whole body is visible." (The
Instructor, II., xi 1st century)
6CHASTE BEHAVIOR
(1 Pet. 31-6)
- 33 "Whose adorning let it not be the outward
adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing
jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel 4 but
let it be the hidden man of the heart, in the
incorruptible apparel of a meek and quiet spirit,
which is in the sight of God of great price." -
III. DO EMPHASIZE THE INWARD CHARACTER
1. "Hidden..." - not physically visible.
2. "Incorruptible apparel..." - eternal
clothing.
3. "Meek quiet" - humble self-restrained.
4. "Sight of God..." - Valuable before God.
7CHASTE BEHAVIOR
(1 Pet. 31-6)
- 35 "For after this manner in the old time the
holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned
themselves, being in subjection unto their own
husbands 6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling
him lord whose daughters ye are, as long as ye
do well, and are not put in fear by any terror." -
IV. CHASTE BEHAVIOR IS "BY FAITH"
1. Holiness - "Set apart" unto God (1 Ths.
41-8).
2. "Trust in God" - Faith (Heb. 116)!
3. Sara's "Daughters" - Imitating her godliness
(cp. 1 Cor. 106, 10).
8CHASTE BEHAVIOR

2. Older women need to teach younger women
(Titus 25).
