British Descendants
  • Most of the British are descended from people who
    came to the British Isles long ago.

Celtics-first inhabitants
  • The Celtics are thought by some scholars to have
    come to islands around 450 B.C. Mountainous
    areas of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland have
    remained Celtic.

Anglo-Saxon
  • Around 400-1000 A.D the next wave of invaders
    entered the British Isles. The Anglo-Saxon were
    summoned by the Celtic tribes to combat the
    Northern warriors, the Danes.

Anglo-Saxons Vikings
  • The Anglo-Saxon were from Germany and Denmark.
    Later, the Vikings from Scandinavia would invade
    the British Isles.

Normans
  • Last to arrive in Britain were the Normans from
    northern France in 1066. English today reflects
    the Anglo-Saxon and Norman French languages.

Global Power
  • With the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588,
    England became a world power.

Imperial England
  • In the 1600s, the English began establishing
    colonies around the world. By the 1900s, the
    empire covered nearly one fourth of the worlds
    land area.

Industrial Revolution
  • During the 1700s, England became the cradle of
    the Industrial Revolution. Once such industry
    was the textile industry as seen in the photo to
    the left.

Decline of Empire
  • World wars and economic competition from other
    countries weakened the United Kingdom.
  • By the 1970s most British colonies had gained
    independence. Most of the previous colonies make
    up the Commonwealth of nations.

  • The United Kingdom is a constitutional
    monarchy.
  • The king/queen is the head of the state, but
    parliament makes the countrys laws.
