When was Mound Bayou founded?
It was founded in 1887.
It is called Mound Bayou because it is right by
an Indian mound where two bayous converge.

Business Ventures
Charles Banks started the Negro Business League
in Greenville in 1905,
which was a self help group.
They started the cotton seed oil mill because
cotton seed oil was in great demand and because
cotton was king in the South.

governed?
The people of MB governed themselves.
It was run by all Black people.
The government truly worked for the best interest
of the community.
The women of Mound Bayou were also involved in
the government.

They bought the land from the rail road.
The rail road provided transportation.
It also provided jobs.
