• A form of literature acted out by performers
• Although the script remains the same, a
  directors and/or actors interpretations may
  differ
• Ex. Hamlet and The Lion King

Two Types of Drama

• Tragedy a serious, solemn play based on
  important social, personal, and religious issues
• Ex. The Diary of Anne Frank
• Comedy a play that shows the humorous actions of
  characters as they try to solve problems
• Ex. Legally Blonde

Playwright

• The person who writes the play similar to an
  author who writes a novel

Stage Directions

• Notes that convey information about sound
  effects, actions, sets, and characters
  personalities and ways of speaking
• Written in italics and put in brackets
• Ex. John motions to the door, slightly nodding
  his head

Theme

• As in narrative, this is the lesson learned
• The protagonist should learn a lesson and the
  audience should learn a lesson.

Characterization

• The development of a character over the course of
  the story.
• -Indirect (shows a character through speech,
  appearance, reaction of others, actions, and
  thoughts)
• -Direct (tells exactly what the character is
  like)

Dialogue

• Conversations between characters
• Used to reveal insight into the characters
  personalities and feelings
• Used to advance the plot
• Lines that dont add to the theme or advance the
  plot are usually removed

Plot

• How the events unfold
• Similar to a narrative plot with an exposition,
  climax, and resolution

Setting

• Created by set designers
• Includes lighting, costumes, music, and props
• These items help create a mood
• These items reveal time and place

• Hinting at whats to come
• This can be done in a variety of ways
• Words spoken by actors
• Changes in music
• Symbols

• It is meant to be performed in front of an
