Integers
  • The upside of negativity
  • Introduction to subtracting integers

Video 5 about integers1 about subtracting
integers

- - -
  • Negative numbers.
  • Negative numbers are the opposite of positive
    numbers.

- - -

- - -

3
You can think of opposite signed numbers as if
they were on opposite teams, working against each
other.
4

5
Addition doesnt always mean get more.
  • Addition means to put two things together.

6
6 2 8
Positive put together with positive means more
positive. The rules havent changed ?
7
But if theyre opposite kinds of things
  • If were adding numbers of opposite signs, we
have to do the opposite operation SUBTRACT.
  • So does not always mean we get more.

8
6 -2
  • Is the same as 6 2
  • Which is 4.

If this is confusing, review the earlier lesson
on adding integers.
9
And guess what?
  • A minus sign doesnt always mean well get less.

10
What about subtracting ?
  • Its the opposite of adding. Yea, you know that.
  • Lets know it and apply it.

11
We already know
  • 6 -2 is the same as 6 2
  • Which is 4.

12
  • If 6 -2 is the same as 6 -2, then
  • . 6 2 is the same as 6 -2, right?
  • We just switched the order we said it in.

13
Any time we have a subtraction problem
  • We can solve it by adding the opposite.

14
You may have been told to
  • . Change subtraction to addition but its not
    quite that simple.
  • My bank account would love it if I could do
that. If I just change the minus sign to
plus, Im doing the opposite of what Im supposed
    to do.

15
But if we change subtraction to
  • Adding the OPPOSITE
  • -- change two things -
  • Then were back in balance, and doing what the
    problem says to do.

(The people who say change subtraction to
addition expect you to remember to also change
the sign of the number youre subtracting.)
16
6 2 4
  • Thats right, the rules havent changed.
  • But we can think of this in a more advanced way
  • 6 2 6 -2, which of course 4 because same
sign, add and keepdifferent sign subtract!Keep
the sign of the bigger number,Then youll be
    exact!

17
Two Marks Bam! Bam!
  • 6 2
  • 6 2
  • 6 - 2

18
Use the opposite concept
  • Opposites are you know, not the same. Opposite.
  • Backwards is not forwards. Theyre opposite.
  • HOWEVER, its not like theyre just different,
    like cherry and pineapple.
  • if you turn around and turn around again
youre going the same direction again.
  • Yes is the opposite of no but if you refuse to
say no then havent you really said yes?

19
So, turn em BOTH around
  • Give these guys the bam! Bam! treatment
  • 6 5 50 - 25
  • 10 3 40 - 20
  • 10 4 10 5

20
Grade yourself
  • If the new problems look like this, you have 100
    A ?
  • 6 5 50 -25
  • 10 3 40 -20
  • 10 4 10 5

21
And the answers are
  • 6 5 1 50 -25 25
  • 10 3 7 40 -20 20
  • 10 4 6 10 5 5

22
Yea, but I knew that
  • Yes, you already knew 6 5 was one.
  • Next movie will explain how to solve 5 6.
Maybe you can figure it out for yourself ?
