History of Womens Suffrage
  • United Kingdom
  • 1832-Suffrage Reform Act
  • Expressly forbade women from voting
  • Women were ok with not voting until they were
    told they couldnt
  • Began about a century of fighting for the vote in
    England
  • First to use hunger strikes as a method of
    rebellion

Hunger Strikes
  • Began in Ireland in about the 1400s
  • The Irish would camp out on the doorsteps of the
    English landowners and refused to eat
  • Eventually the Irish would die on the front porch
    of the landowners to make their point
  • No one wants a dead dude on their porch because
    they were too cheap to feed them

  • Women in England were arrested for protesting
  • In jail they refused to eat
  • The British government didnt want a bunch of
    dead women who were unlawfully arrested
  • Began force feeding the women

Hunger Strikes in the US
  • Alice Paul was arrested for protesting against
    Wilson during World War I
  • After she was arrested she and the other women
    went on a hunger strike
  • They were force-fed while in prison

Silent Sentinels
  • Women stood outside the White House and protested
    for womens rights for months
  • Began on January 10, 1917 and ended in June 1919
  • Picketed everyday except Sunday for 2 ½ years

Women Gain Suffrage
  • The newspapers reported on the story of the women
    in prison
  • The women were released and returned to
    protesting for womens rights

Final Vote in Congress
  • The Suffrage movement needed a 2/3 majority in
    the Senate
  • They were short by one vote the night before the
    bill was scheduled to pass
  • A senator was sent a telegram by his mother and
    changed his vote to yes

19th Amendment
  • Passed in 1919 and enacted in 1920
  • Section 1 The right of citizens of the United
    States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by
    the United States or by any State on account of
    sex. 
  • Section 2 Congress shall have power to enforce
    this article by appropriate legislation.
