• The sample extraction can be done using either a
  prescription bottle with a
• septa cap or a separatory funnel

• Extraction using a prescription bottle with a
  septa cap

• Collect a measured amount of sample

• For samples that will be stored for more than a
  day or for samples with a high pH
• Adjust the pH to less than 2 with Hydrochloric
  acid or Sulfuric Acid (typically 3-5 drops
  depending on buffers in sample)

• Add Solvent

10 parts sample to 1 part solvent
For example For 150 ml of sample add 15 ml of
solvent

• Shake for 2 minutes

• Open the cap on the bottle during the 2 minute
  shaking to relieve the pressure

• Solvent is heavier than water and will sink

• Turn bottle upside down

• Use the syringe to remove the solvent

• Fill the cuvette with solvent

• Place the cuvette in the InfraCal frosted side to
  the front

• Press the run button

• Oil concentration displayed

• Extraction using a separatory funnel

• Pour measured sample into separatory funnel

• Measure one tenth of the sample size of solvent

For example For 150 ml of sample add 15 ml of
solvent

• Pour the solvent into the sample collection
  container to rinse interior surfaces and cap of
  left over oil

• Pour the solvent from the sample container into
  separatory funnel containing sample

• Shake for 2 minutes

• Stop to vent during the 2 minutes shaking to
  relieve the pressure

• Put the separatory funnel into the stand

24

• Allow the solvent to sink to the bottom

25

• Fill the cuvette with solvent

• Place the cuvette in the InfraCal frosted side to
  the front

27

• Press the run button

• Oil concentration displayed

Silica Gel Extraction The difference between TPH
(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) and TOG (Total Oil
and Grease) is the polar organics are removed
from the extract using silica gel. The remaining
hydrocarbons are the non-polar components
considered to be TPH
