A. Jesus was not an alarmist, we had better pay
attention!
1. Easy to think Not me! (Mt. 2435-39)
2. Easy to dismiss negatives (Mt. 157ff).
B. Not a warning against open discipleship.
1. Salt Light (Mt. 513-16).
2. Magnify Christ (Phil. 120).
3. Only way some see Christ is through someone
elses life (1 Pet. 31-3).
4. Christianity exemplified is a convincing
argument (Mt. 1333)!

1. Did not say Dont do righteousness.
a. Some say you CANT do righteousness.

a. Jesus said do it for the right reason!
(Alms Jas. 127 Prayer Acts 125 etc.)
b. Jesus warned of improper motives!
c. Jesus condemns ostentatious works.

B. Examples of wrong motives
1. King Saul gave his daughter to David from a
selfish motive (1 Sam. 1821)!
2. Ahimaaz wanted to look good, even if he had
to lie (2 Sam. 1819-33).
3. Pharisees brought an adulteress to Jesus in
order to ensnare Jesus (Jn 83-11).
4. Judas hid betrayal behind a kiss (Matt.
2649).
5. Ananias Sapphira lied died to get glory
of men (Acts 51-6).

  • III. TESTS FOR OUR MOTIVES

A. Do we work for Jesus when we can be seen by
others, but not when things are private?
B. Do we quit doing good deeds when men fail to
applaud encourage us?
C. Do we work as long as we are in the lead, but
quit when we have to follow?
D. Do we give more when it is known publicly and
less when it is secret?

  • III. TESTS FOR OUR MOTIVES

E. Are we happy when the church serves us, but
unhappy when we are expected to serve?
F. If we do something good, do we make sure
others know about it?
G. Do we magnify our efforts? Are we proud of
our humility?
H. Do go through the motions before brethren,
but dont even try at home?
I. Would we be ashamed if our private conduct
were known publicly?

CONCLUSION 1. Must deny ourselves (Mt 1624).
2. Must humbly serve (Mt 2311-12).
He gave Himself for you. Will you give yourself
for Him?
