Ohio Geography

• Ohio is located in the mid-west portion of the
  United States.
• It borders, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana,
  West Virginia, and Kentucky.
• Ohios Northern Border is Lake Erie and Canada.
• Ohio is the 34th largest state. It covers about
  45,000 square miles.

• The highest point in Ohio is 1500 feet above sea
  level.
• Temperature Range 15-85 degrees Fahrenheit.
• The state is 220 miles long and wide at the most
  distal points.

• Marietta was founded in 1788.
• Ohios first Constitutional Convention convened
  in 1802 at Chillicothe
• In 1803 Ohio became a state
• Columbus became the state capital in 1816.
• The state industry consisted of farming,
  trapping and trading.

• Ohios second bicentennial was in 2003.
• Today the state has grown from about 50,000
  people to almost 11.5 million people.
• Ohio Industry Includes manufacturing,
  Agriculture, Retail, Wholesale, Communication,
  Utilities, finance, insurance, education, real
  estate, construction, and many other services.
• Major productions Tires, Rubber, Steel,
  processed food, and manufactured goods.
• Ohio cities include Toledo, Dayton, Columbus,
  Cleveland, Akron, and Cincinnati.

• Ohio has the largest Amish community in the
  world.
• The Amish in Ohio reside in the Holmes-Wayne
  county area.
• They do not use modern technology such as phones
  and cars.
• They support themselves through farming
• All work is done with simple machines and horses.

The Senate

• Each senator represents about 300,000 people
• Elections are held every two years, with half
  the senate being elected
• Senate President calls the senate to order in
  January of each new session.
• Republicans currently have the majority.

How the Senate works

• The senate officers are the president and the
  president pro tempore.
• The senate is divided into fourteen standing
  committees.
• The chairman of each committee is in charge of
  scheduling hearings, and committee sessions as
  well as a voting time for their bills.
• The committee will vote on each bill that they
  receive. If they pass it, the Senate will debate
  it on the floor and vote.
• If it is passed, it goes on to the lower house
  for vote.

• The house convenes in January of each new
  session
• The house works in much the same way as the
  senate
• The house has 22 standing committees

• Considered by both houses on three different
  days.
• must be copied and given to every member.

  it.

• Ignores it for ten days, bill becomes a law
• vetoes it with objections
• 3/5 majority in both houses override veto.

The Ohio Smoking Ban

• This law was put on the ballot through
  initiative.
• The law prohibits any people from smoking in any
  public place, or place of work.
• It does not prohibit people from smoking in
  their own home.
• Any public place found to be in violation will
  receive a warning letter and then a fine.
