  • Chapter 4 - Six Sigma Revolution
  • Tactical Six Sigma
  • The project team should create a problem
statement that is specific, measurable, describes
the impact to the business, AND does not jump to
    causes or solutions.
  • The project team needs careful guidance on
    defining project scope.
  • A map of a process (process mapping) to be
improved should be created that captures how the
    process operates today.

  • Chapter 5 - Six Sigma Revolution
  • Measuring Projects
  • Determine ONE key measure of your process
efficiency cycle time, cost, labor, or value.
  • Use simple collection forms.
  • Make sure your sampling is representative and
    random.

  • Chapter 6 - Six Sigma Revolution
  • Data and Process Analysis
  • The goal of analysis is to determine and validate
the root causation of the project teams original
    problem.
  • At process analysis completion, the team should
have greater information about the type of
    problem it needs to fix.
  • The most used tool for brainstorming root causes
Is the root cause diagram or fishbone.

  • Chapter 7 - Six Sigma Revolution
  • Root Cause Analysis Why Why Why . . .
  • The most important step in analysis is validating
    root causation.
  • Trial and error experimentation is a common
method of experimentation, but is mostly error.
  • Creating effects tables is a simple mathematical
method to determine which factors are larger
    contributors to variation.

  • The Hawthorne Studies
  • A very famous series of productivity improvement
studies carried out at the Hawthorne plant of
Western Electric during the 1920s by Elton Mayo
    of Harvard University.
  • One unintended outcome of the study was this
Hawthorne Effect, which describes how people,
singled out for a study, may improve their
performance simply because of the added attention
they receive from the researchers, rather than
the specific factors being tested. The potential
outcome of managerial revenge for negative
    responses is not a factor.
  • This effect has been seen to be transferred to
virtually any large company study or survey
series. We can see the effects in simple
performance survey scales of Favorable vs.
industry ratings. There are often unkown or
    hidden factors that are operating.
  • The other known result of the Hawthorne studies
is that the positive effect of attention wore
    off over time.
  • What that could mean for any company is that,
year over year, results may decline and there
will be no specific correlation to root cause.
Thus the need for constant measuring TOOLS to see
how any process is currently performing.
