2Need for new technologies
3Intelligent distribution substation (IntDS)
- Developed by a consortium of Dutch industries
- Installed and tested in the grid of DSO Alliander
- Additional functions of the IntDS
- Monitoring
- Control
- Improving Power Quality
4Intelligent components of IntDS
5IntDS implementation
- District with large amount ofmicro Combined Heat
Powerat customers
6Test program
Power Quality improvement by the IntDS
- Voltage control
- Reduction of harmonic distortion
- Reduction of flicker
- Mitigation of voltage dips
7Voltage control
- Performed by Smart Transformer
- Electronic tap changer ensuresa constant voltage
level on the LV rail of the IntDS. - The voltage control set-pointhas to be
determined to achievethe optimal voltage level
on PCCsof all LV customers.

8Voltage control test results
9Harmonic distortion reduction
- Performed by ESI(Electricity storage inverter)
- Resistive harmonic damping
- Passive harmonic dampingThe filter capacitors of
the ESI take part in the filtering of harmonics.

inverter
10Harmonic distortion reduction test results
11Voltage dips mitigation
- Can be performed bythe Smart Transformerthe
ESI (Electricity storage inverter) - Voltage dips occur only a few times per yearon
an LV bus-bar of Dutch distribution
substations.Thats why this functionality is not
actively tested.
12Flicker reduction (LV side)
- Performed by
- The electronic tap changer of the Smart
Transformer - The flicker reduction control of the
bidirectional inverter (ESI) of the storage
system.
13Flicker reduction test results
14Conclusions
- The Intelligent substation has proved to be safe
in operation. - The first field test results demonstrate a
significant reduction of voltage variations,
harmonic and THD levels both at the LV bus-bar of
the IntDS and at the LV customers. - Further metering and test programs will be
performed to set optimal set-points for control
equipments. - The proved principles can be used for areas with
high levels of PQ distortions.
