The responsibilities of fellowship
What we share is the basis of our fellowship
What are the expectations placed upon us,
assuming that we share this basis?
How should fellows behave?

Many in one
Scriptural figures of brothers and sisters in
fellowship
29
Fellowship
Rom 124-5
For as in one body we have many members, and not
all the members have the same function, so we,
who are many, are one body in Christ, and
individually we are members one of another.
1 Cor 1212-14
For just as the body is one and has many members,
and all the members of the body, though many, are
one body, so it is with Christ. For indeed we
were all baptised by one Spirit into one body
(whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free) and we
were all given one Spirit to drink. For indeed
the body is not made up of one part but of many.

Fellowship
Ex 258
let them make me a sanctuary, so that I may dwell
among them
Eph 219-22
built upon the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the
cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined
together and grows into a holy temple in the
Lord in whom you also are built together
spiritually into a dwelling place for God.
2 Cor 616
we are the temple of the living God as God said,
I will live and dwell among them
31
Fellowship
Eph 314-15
the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom
the whole family in heaven and earth takes its
name
Matt 1249-50
pointing to his disciples, he said, Here are my
mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will
of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister
and mother.
32
Fellowship
John 1014-16
I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own
know me, just as the Father knows me and I know
the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.
I have other sheep that do not belong to this
fold. I must bring them also, and they will
listen to my voice. So there will be one flock,
one shepherd.
1 Pet 52-4
tend the flock of God that is in your charge,
not for sordid gain but eagerly. Do not lord it
over those in your charge, but be examples to the
flock. And when the chief shepherd appears, you
will win the crown of glory that never fades away.
33
Fellowship
John 155
I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who
abide in me and I in them bear much fruit,
because apart from me you can do nothing.
1 Cor 1016-17
The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a
sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we
break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ?
Because there is one bread, we who are many are
one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

who allots to each one individually

Fellowship
1 Cor 1212-14
The body is a unit, yet it is made up of many
parts, and although all its parts are many, they
form one body. So it is with Christ. For indeed
we were all baptised by one Spirit into one body
- whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free - and we
were all given one Spirit to drink. For indeed
the body is not made up of one part but of many.

Fellowship
1 Cor 1215-16
INDEPENDENCE
Suppose the foot were to say, Because I am not a
hand, I do not belong to the body, it belongs to
the body nonetheless. Suppose the ear were to
say, because I am not an eye, I do not belong to
the body, it still belongs to the body.
1 Cor 1221
SUPERIORITY
The eye cannot say to the hand, I do not need
you, or the head to the feet, I do not need
you.
41
Fellowship
1 Cor 1217-20
VARIETY
If the body were all eye, how could it hear? If
the body were all ear, how could it smell? But in
fact, God appointed each limb and organ to its
own place in the body as he chose. If the whole
were a single organ, there would not be a body at
all in fact, however, there are many different
organs, but one body.
42
Fellowship
1 Cor 1222-24
HONOUR/RESPECT
Those parts of the body which seem to be more
frail than others are indispensable, and those
parts of the body which we regard as less
honourable are treated with special honour. The
parts we are modest about are treated with
special respect, whereas our respectable parts
have no such need.
43
Fellowship
1 Cor 1224-26
MUTUALITY
God has combined the various parts of the
body,so that there might be no division in the
body, but that all its parts might feel the same
concern for one another. If one part suffers,
all suffer together if one flourishes, all
rejoice together.
44
Fellowship
Two models of the community
NEEDS-based
ASSET-based
45
Fellowship
NEEDS based community development
Community level
We know what the community should look like We
identify what we need in order to look like
that We find individuals to fill the positions,
to do the duties
Personal level
Individuals are needy Everyone is/has a problem
which must be helped The (few) willing find
themselves consumed by helping everybody else
46
Fellowship
ASSET based community development
Community level
We dont know what the community should look
like We identify what we have what can we
contribute? We provide opportunities for
individuals to do what they can
Personal level
Individuals have talents, gifts Everyone is able
to contribute what they are good at and what they
love to do Because they are appreciated, everyone
is more willing to assist and become involved

NEEDS based fellowship problems
UNSUITABILITY
The head should not say to the foot, I need you
to be a hand, or the mouth to the ear, I dont
need any more ears, can you keep watch instead?
RELUCTANCE
The ear wants to cry, I am not an eye, I cannot
see a thing! and the body sees nothing as it
should be seen.
APATHY
The foot says, Because I am not a hand, I might
as well not belong to the body, and although it
belongs in the body it does nothing.
51
Fellowship
NEED based fellowship problems
DESPERATION
The needs of the many are left to the efforts of
the few that remain willing..
