3SOL 3.2- Simple Machines
A simple machine helps people do work!
A lever moves around a fixed point called a
fulcrum.
A wheel and axle is made up of a large wheel
attached to a smaller wheel or rod.
A wedge is a made up of two inclined planes
placed back-to-back
4SOL 3.2- Simple Machines, cont..
A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a
pole that is usually used to hold things
together.
An inclined plane is a flat surface with one end
higher than the other.
A pulley is a rope or chain and a wheel around
which the rope fits
5SOL 3.3- Matter
- Objects can be described by their physical
properties. - A physical property is anything that can be
observed using the senses. - Objects are made of one or more materials
- materials are made up of parts that are too small
to see with out magnification - physical properties remain the same when the
object is reduced in size.
6SOL 3.4- Life Processes
Behavioral and physical adaptations help an
animal to survive
7SOL 3.5- Living Systems Animals and plants are
interdependent
8SOL 3.6- Living Systems, cont.. Environments
support a diversity of plants and animals share
limited resources
Dry-land environments
9SOL 3.6- Living Systems, cont.. Environments
support a diversity of plants and animals share
limited resources
Water-related environments
10SOL 3.7- Soil
topsoil
subsoil
bedrock
- soil provides the support and nutrients necessary
for plant growth - topsoil is a natural product of subsoil and
bedrockrock, clay, silt, sand, and humus are
components of soils - soil is a natural resource and should be conserved
11SOL 3.8- Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change
12SOL 3.8- Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change
The sun rises in the East
And sets in the West
The tilt of the Earth causes seasons. When one
hemisphere is experiencing summer, the opposite
hemisphere is experiencing winter.
13SOL 3.8- Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change
A life cycle is all the parts of a plant or an
animal's life from birth to death. The life cycle
of a bird is made up of unhatched chick, chick,
young adult, and adult
14SOL 3.9-The Water Cycle
The energy from the sun drives the water cycle.
Water is a natural resource and needs to be
conserved.
15SOL 3.10- Resources natural events and human
influences can affect the survival of species
recycling
16SOL 3.10- Sources of Energy
17SOL K.5- Sink or Float
float
sink
Some objects will float on water, while others
will sink.
float
sink
wood fruit paper metal
metal
18SOL 1.2- Moving Objects
The motion of objects may be
straight
circular
back and forth vibrations Examples include
humming, strumming a guitar, or plucking a rubber
band
curved
19SOL 1.3- Materials interacting with water
Some liquids will dissolve in water, while others
will not. Most substances will dissolve better in
hot water than they will in cold water.
Things that will mix easily in water
Things that will not mix easily easily in water
vinegar milk baking soda powered drink
mix sugar salt
Oil sand soil rocks
20SOL 2.2- Magnets
A magnet is a piece of iron that pulls things
that are also made of iron or nickel.
Similar magnet poles repel, opposite poles
attract.
21SOL 2.6- Weather
Common types of storms
floods
Tornado
blizzard
drought
hurricane
22SOL 2.6- Weather
We use various tools measure weather.
thermometer
Rain gauge
Weather vane
