1
MIXTURES
2
What is a mixture?
  • ?A mixture is a combination of two or more
substances that are NOT chemically combined.
  • When 2 or more materials are put together, they
form a mixture, if they do not react and form a
    compound.
  • No chemical change happens when a mixture is made.

3
Separating Mixtures
  • Do you like mushrooms on your pizza?
  • If not, just pick them off!
  • ?Mixtures can be physically changed.
  • The identities do not change.

4
Ways to Change
  • Mixtures can be physically changed by
  • ?1. Distillation
  • ?2. Magnet
  • ?3. Centrifuge
  • ?4. Evaporation

5
Mixtures vs. Compounds
  • Mixtures Compounds
  • 1.Made of elements, 1.Made of elements
  • compounds, or both
  • 2.No change in original 2.change in original
  • properties of components prop. of components
  • 3.Separated by physical 3.separated by chemical
  • means means

6
Types of Mixtures
  1. Solutions
  2. Suspensions
  3. Colloids

7
Solutions
  • ?A solution is a mixture that appears to be a
    single substance. (homogeneous mixture)
  • ?Dissolvingprocess where particles spread evenly
    throughout a mixture

8
In solutions
  • ?solutesubstance that is dissolved (salt)
  • ?solventsubstance in which the solute is
    dissolved (water)
  • A solute must be soluble, or able to dissolve, in
    the solvent.
  • A substance that is insoluble, or unable to
dissolve, forms a mixture that is not a solution.

9
Examples of Solutions
  • ?Salt Water
  • Saltsolute
  • Watersolvent
  • Tap Water
  • Soft Drinks
  • Gasoline
  • Cleaning Supplies

10
Solution Particles
  • ?Particles in a solution are too small that they
never settle out and cant be removed by
    filtering.

11
Plug it inPlug it in!!!
  • 1. What is a combination of two or more
substances that are not chemically combined?

12
  • 2. You just made a glass of lemonade. You
decide to want to reverse your solution mixture.
You try to filter out the particles. Can you
predict what happens when you try this?

13
  • 3. What is one way you could physically change a
    mixture?

14
  • 4. Is a compound or a mixture separated by
    chemical means?

15
  • 5. What type of mixture appears to be a single
    substance?

16
  • 6. The substance that is dissolved is called
    what?

17
  • 7. In a salt water solution, the water
    represents what?

18
  • 8. You and a friend are once again walking home
from school and you find another strange thing.
You notice that its appearance is very shiny.
After doing some tests, you also notice that it
is a very good conductor of heat. Can you
predict the category this substance would fall
    into on the Periodic Table?
