  • 15 Wherefore, lift up your hearts
and rejoice, and gird up your loins,
and take upon you my whole armor,
that ye may be able to withstand the
evil day, having done all, that ye
    may be able to stand.
  • 16 Stand, therefore, having your loins girt about
with truth, having on the breastplate of
righteousness, and your feet shod with the
preparation of the gospel of peace, which I have
sent mine angels to commit unto you

be able to quench all the fiery darts of the

Where are we supposed to stand?

  • Certainly Roman forces used flaming missiles to
destroy their enemies, but they were much more
subtle appearing and more deadly. The "fiery
darts" we read about in this passage were made
from a hollow reed (something like bamboo).
  • One end was stoppered then the reed was filled
with a flammable liquid, probably a mixture of
alcohol and naphtha. A loosely fitting stopper
holding a wick was slipped into the other end of
the tube and lit. It was then shot like an arrow,
not a bundle of straw or some other flammable
substances, but at the soldier himself. Since the
missile had it's own fuel source and the wick was
protected by the tube, the missile kept burning
    until it hit something.
  • When it hit a soldier, the wick popped out, the
liquid spilled over the soldier' s armor and
ignited, cooking him in his own armor.

  • and whoso would hearken unto the
iron rod, and would hold fast unto it,
they would never perish neither could the
temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary
overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away
    to destruction.

Question In Lehis dream, where were fiery darts
of the adversary?

  • 18 And take the helmet of salvation, and the
sword of my Spirit, which I will pour out upon
you, and my word which I reveal unto you, and be
agreed as touching all things whatsoever ye ask
of me, and be faithful until I come, and ye shall
be caught up, that where I am ye shall be also.

  • Holy men and women stand in holy
places, and these holy places consist
of our temples, our chapels, our
homes, and the stakes of Zion, which are,
as the Lord declares, "for a defense, and for a
refuge from the storm, and from wrath when it
shall be poured out without mixture upon the
    whole earth."
  • We must heed the Lord's counsel to the Saints of
this dispensation "Prepare yourselves for the
    great day of the Lord."
  • This preparation must consist of more than just
casual membership in the Church. We must be
guided by personal revelation and the counsel of
the living prophet so we will not be deceived.

  • When we honor the priesthood, we have
heavenly hosts and angels who are watching over
us. Some of us know how literally that is true.
  • Some of us have an absolute assurance that those
whom we have known who held the priesthood who
are now part of that heavenly host are deeply
aware of what we are doing and sometimes deeply
concerned for the quality of our service.

In Closing, John A. Widstoe
  • These are trying days, in which Satan rages, at
home and abroad, hard days, evil and ugly days.
We stand helpless as it seems before them. We
need help. We need strength. We need guidance.
  • Perhaps if we would do our work in behalf of
those of the unseen world who hunger and pray for
the work we can do for them, the unseen world
would in return give us help in this day of our
urgent need. There are more in the other world
than there are here. There is more power and
strength there than we have here upon this earth.
  • We have but a trifle, and that trifle is taken
from the immeasurable power of God. We shall make
no mistake in becoming collaborators in the
Lords almighty work for human redemption (In
    Conference Report, Apr. 1943, p. 39).

Joseph Smith
  • We contemplate a people who have embraced a
system of religion, unpopular, and the adherence
to which has brought upon them repeated
persecutions. A people who, for their love to
God, and attachment to His cause, have suffered
hunger, nakedness, perils, and almost every
    privation.
  • A people who, for the sake of their religion,
have had to mourn the premature death of parents,
husbands, wives, and children. A people, who have
preferred death to slavery and hypocrisy, and
have honorably maintained their characters, and
stood firm and immovable, in times that have
    tried men's souls.
  • Stand fast, ye Saints of God, hold on a little
while longer, and the storm of life will be past,
and you will be rewarded by that God whose
servants you are, and who will duly appreciate
all your toils and afflictions for Christ's sake
    and the Gospel's.
  • Your names will be handed down to posterity as
Saints of God and virtuous men.

    Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 4337)
