Juan 111 - 45
1 En aquel tiempo, se encontraba enfermo
Lázaro, en Betania, el pueblo de María y de
su hermana Marta.
2 María era la que una vez ungió al Señor con
perfume y le enjugó los pies con su cabellera.
El enfermo era su hermano Lázaro.
3 Por eso las dos hermanas le mandaron decir a
Jesús Señor, el amigo a quien tanto quieres
está enfermo.

4 Al oír esto, Jesús dijo Esta enfermedad no
acabará en la muerte, sino que servirá para la
gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea
glorificado por ella.
5 Jesús amaba a Marta, a su hermana y a
Lázaro.
6 Sin embargo, cuando se enteró de que Lázaro
estaba enfermo se detuvo dos días más en el
lugar en que se hallaba.
7 Después dijo a sus discípulos Vayamos otra
vez a Judea.
8 Los discípulos le dijeron Maestro, hace
poco que los judíos querían apedrearte, y tú
vas a volver allá?

9 Jesús les contestó Acaso no tiene doce
horas el día? El que camina de día no tropieza,
porque ve la luz de este mundo
10 en cambio, el que camina de noche tropieza,
porque le falta la luz.
11 Dijo esto y luego añadió Lázaro, nuestro
amigo, se ha dormido pero yo voy ahora a
despertarlo.
12 Entonces le dijeron sus discípulos Señor,
si duerme, es que va a sanar.
13 Jesús hablaba de la muerte, pero ellos
creyeron que hablaba del sueño natural.

14 Entonces Jesús les dijo, abiertamente
Lázaro ha muerto,
15 Y me alegro por ustedes de no haber estado
allí, para que crean. Ahora, vamos allá.
16 Entonces Tomás, por sobrenombre el Gemelo,
dijo a los demás discípulos Vayamos también
nosotros, para morir con él.
17 Cuando llegó Jesús, Lázaro llevaba ya cuatro
días en el sepulcro.

18 Betania quedaba cerca de Jerusalén, como a
unos dos kilómetros y medio,
19 y muchos judíos habían ido a ver a Marta y
a María para consolarlas por la muerte de su
hermano.
20 Apenas oyó Marta que Jesús llegaba, salió a
su encuentro pero María se quedó en casa.
21 Le dijo Marta a Jesús Señor, si hubieras
estado aquí, no habría muerto mi hermano.
22 Pero aun ahora estoy segura de que Dios te
concederá cuanto le pidas.

23 Jesús le dijo Tu hermano resucitará.
24 Marta respondió Ya sé que resucitará en la
resurrección del último día.
25 Jesús le dijo Yo soy la resurrección y la
vida. El que cree en mí, aunque haya muerto,
vivirá
26 y todo aquel que está vivo y cree en mí,
no morirá para siempre. Crees tú esto?
27 Ella le contestó Sí, Señor. Creo
firmemente que tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de
Dios, el que tenía que venir al mundo.

28 Después de decir estas palabras, fue a
buscar a su hermana María y le dijo en voz
baja Ya vino el Maestro y te llama.
29 Al oír esto, María se levantó en el acto y
salió hacia donde estaba Jesús,
30 porque él no había llegado aún al pueblo,
sino que estaba en el lugar donde Marta lo había
encontrado.
31 Los judíos que estaban con María en la casa,
consolándola, viendo que ella se levantaba y
salía de prisa, pensaron que iba al sepulcro
para llorar allí y la siguieron.

32 Cuando llegó María adonde estaba Jesús, al
verlo, se echó a sus pies y le dijo Señor,
si hubieras estado aquí, no habría muerto mi
hermano.
33 Jesús, al verla llorar y al ver llorar a
los judíos que la acompañaban, se conmovió hasta
lo más hondo
34 y preguntó Dónde lo han puesto? Le
contestaron Ven, Señor, y lo verás.
35 Jesús se puso a llorar

36 Y los judíos comentaban De veras cuánto
lo amaba!
37 Algunos decían No podía éste, que abrió
los ojos al ciego de nacimiento, hacer que
Lázaro no muriera?
38 Jesús, profundamente conmovido todavía,
se detuvo ante el sepulcro, que era una cueva,
sellada con una losa
39 Entonces dijo Jesús Quiten la losa. Pero
Marta, la hermana del que había muerto, le
replicó Señor, ya huele mal, porque lleva
cuatro días.

40 Le dijo Jesús No te he dicho que si
crees, verás la gloria de Dios?
41 Entonces quitaron la piedra. Jesús levantó
los ojos a lo alto y dijo Padre, te doy
gracias porque me has escuchado.
42 Yo ya sabía que tú siempre me escuchas
pero lo he dicho a causa de esta muchedumbre que
me rodea, para que crean que tú me has enviado.
43 Luego gritó con voz potente Lázaro, sal
de allí!

44 Y salió el muerto, atados con vendas las
manos y los pies, y la cara envuelta en un
sudario. Jesús les dijo Desátenlo, para que
pueda andar.
45 Muchos de los judíos que habían ido a casa de
Marta y María, al ver lo que había hecho
Jesús, creyeron en él.

1 Now a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the
village of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 Mary was the one who had anointed the Lord
with perfumed oil and dried his feet with her
hair it was her brother Lazarus who was ill.
3 So the sisters sent word to him, saying,
Master, the one you love is ill.

4 When Jesus heard this he said, This illness
is not to end in death, but is for the glory of
God, that the Son of God may be glorified
through it.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and
Lazarus.
6 So when he heard that he was ill, he remained
for two days in the place where he was.
7 Then after this he said to his disciples,
Let us go back to Judea.
8 The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews
were just trying to stone you, and you want to
go back there?

9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours
in a day? If one walks during the day, he does
not stumble, because he sees the light of this
world.
10 But if one walks at night, he stumbles,
because the light is not in him.
11 He said this, and then told them, Our
friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to
awaken him.
12 So the disciples said to him, Master, if
he is asleep, he will be saved.
16
13 But Jesus was talking about his death, while
they thought that he meant ordinary sleep.
14 So then Jesus said to them clearly,
Lazarus has died.
15 And I am glad for you that I was not there,
that you may believe. Let us go to him.
16     So Thomas, called Didymus, said to his
fellow disciples, Let us also go to die with
him.
17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus
had already been in the tomb for four days.

18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, only about
two miles away.
19 And many of the Jews had come to Martha and
Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she
went to meet him but Mary sat at home.
21 Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had
been here, my brother would not have died.
22 But even now I know that whatever you ask of
God, God will give you.

23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise.
24 Martha said to him, I know he will rise,
in the resurrection on the last day.
25 Jesus told her, I am the resurrection and
the life whoever believes in me, even if he
dies, will live,
26 and everyone who lives and believes in me
will never die. Do you believe this?
27 She said to him, Yes, Lord. I have come
to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of
God, the one who is coming into the world.

28 When she had said this, she went and
called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The
teacher is here and is asking for you.
29 As soon as she heard this, she rose quickly
and went to him.
30 For Jesus had not yet come into the village,
but was still where Martha had met him.
31 So when the Jews who were with her in the
house comforting her saw Mary get up quickly and
go out, they followed her, presuming that she
was going to the tomb to weep there.

32 When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw
him, she fell at his feet and said to him,
Lord, if you had been here, my brother would
not have died.
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews
who had come with her weeping, he became
perturbed and deeply troubled,
34 and said, Where have you laid him? They
said to him, Sir, come and see.
35 And Jesus wept.

36 So the Jews said, See how he loved him.
37 But some of them said, Could not the one
who opened the eyes of the blind man have done
something so that this man would not have died?
38 So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the
tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it.
39 Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha,
the dead man's sister, said to him, Lord, by
now there will be a stench he has been dead for
four days.

40 Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that
if you believe you will see the glory of God?
41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus
raised his eyes and said, Father, I thank
you for hearing me.
42 I know that you always hear me but because
of the crowd here I have said this, that they
may believe that you sent me.
43 And when he had said this, he cried out in
a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!

44 The dead man came out, tied hand and foot
with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in
a cloth. So Jesus said to them, Untie him and
let him go.
45 Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary
and seen what he had done began to believe in
him.

The Fifth Sunday of Lent, 2014, has for its
Gospel the Story of the Raising of Lazarus. It
is the seventh sign in the Gospel of John. The
Lord fulfils his promise I will open your
graves and have you rise from them. Then you
will know that I am the Lord (Ezekiel 3712).
The implications of this miraculous event are
enormous.

El Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma, 2014, tiene para
su Evangelio la historia de La Levantada de
Lázaro de la Muerte. Es la séptima seña en el
Evangelio de Juan. El Señor cumple su promesa
hecha en Ezequiel 3712 Yo voy a abrir sus
sepulcros, los voy a sacar de sus sepulcros,
pueblo mío, y los voy a llevar a la tierra de
Israel. Entonces sabrán que Yo soy el Señor.
Las implicaciones de este acontecimiento
milagroso son enormes.

Peter Chrysologous (in Sermons 631-2) notes
that Our Lord had already raised up the daughter
of Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue (Mark
542). Even so, he left the law of death still
in force. He also raised the only son of the
widow of Nain (see Luke 711-15) In that story,
he halted the bier, and forestalled the young
mans burial, and arrested the onset of
physical decay. But the life he restored had
not completely fallen in to the power of death.

Pedro Chrysologous (en Sermones 631-2) nota que
Nuestro Señor ya había levantado a la hija de
Jairo, el principal de la sinagoga (Marcos
542). Sin embargo, dejó la ley de la muerte en
fuerza. También levantó al único hijo de una
viuda de Naín (Lucas 711-15). En esa historia,
Jesús detuvo al féretro, y levantó al joven de
la muerte. Pero la vida que recobró no había
caído completamente bajo el poder de la muerte.

Peter Chrysologous says The case of Lazarus was
unique. His death and resurrection to life had
nothing in common with the other two. Death had
already exerted its full power over him, so that
in him the sign of the resurrection shone out in
all its fullness. He had already been in the
tomb four full days. This was how Christ showed
his love for his friends. Instead of offering
him a remedy for his illness, he offered him the
glory of rising from the dead.

único. Su muerte y resurrección a la vida no
tuvo nada en común con las otras dos. La muerte
ya había esforzado su poder pleno sobre él, de
manera que en él la seña de la resurrección
brilló con todo su plenitud. Había estado en la
tumba cuatro días completos. Esto es como Jesús
mostró su amor por sus amigos. En vez de darle
un remedio para su enfermedad, le ofreció la
gloria de levantarse de la muerte.

Chrysostom (in Homilies on the Gospel of John
621) says we are to observe that this Mary was
not the harlot mentioned in Matthew 267 or Luke
737, but a different person. The Mary
mentioned here was an honest woman, who treated
the Lord with marked reverence.

John 7) mentions that the Evangelist had a
purpose in mentioning the names of the women.
Not only were they distinguished for their piety,
but that is why the Lord loved them.

explicitly mentions the ointment. Mary had such
a thirst for Christ that she wiped his feet with
her own hair, seeking to fasten to herself in a
more real way the spiritual blessing that comes
from his holy flesh.

In John 111 we see that the illness is
important enough for Mary and Martha to send for
Jesus, saying He whom you love is ill. And
John 115 says Jesus loved Martha and her
sister and Lazarus. Yet, he delays two days
longer in the place where he was. Only then did
he say, Let us go into Judea again. In John
1114, Jesus said it plainly, Lazarus is dead,
and for your sake, I am glad I was not there,
that you may believe.

En Juan 111, vemos que la enfermedad era
suficientemente grave para que Maria y Marta
mandaran recado a Jesús, diciendo Aquel a
quien tu amas esta enfermo. Y Juan 115 dice
Jesús amaba a Marta y a su hermana Maria y
a su hermano Lázaro. Sin embargo, se dilató
dos días más en el lugar donde estaba. Solo
entonces dijo, Vayamos a Judea otra vez. En
Juan 1114, Jesús claramente lo dijo Lázaro

When Jesus arrives at Bethany, Martha says
If you had been here, my brother would not have
died. (This also shows the degree of faith
already present). I know that whatever you ask
from God, God will give you. Jesus says
Your brother will rise again!

Cuando Jesús llego a Betania, Marta le dijo
Si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no hubiera
muerto. (Esto muestra el grado de fe ya
presente). Mas también ahora sé que todo lo
que pidas a Dios, Dios te lo dará. Jesús le
dijo Tu hermano resucitará.

Martha answers I know that he will rise again
in the resurrection, on the last day. Jesus
says I am the resurrection and the life.
He, who believes in me, though he dies, yet
shall he live, and whoever lives and believes
in me, shall never die. Do you believe this?
Jesus wanted to hear Martha say it and she
said I do believe that you are the Christ,
the Son of God, he who is coming into the
world.

Marta contesta Ya sé que resucitará, en la
resurrección, en el día último. Jesús le
dice Yo soy la resurrección y la vida.
Aquel que crea en mi, aunque muera, vivirá. Y
todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá
eternamente. Crees esto? Jesús quería oír a
Marta decirlo y ella lo dijo Yo creo que
tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, el que
viene al mundo.

When Jesus says I am it is said to be Ego
Eimi in Latin. That says something about Jesus
that identifies him with the Divine. He tells us
something of his nature. By saying that he is
The Resurrection and the Life in effect He says
that He in essence is the source of eternal life
for us. These words are a revelation.

Cuando Jesús dice Yo soy... se dice que es un
dicho Ego Eimi en Latín. Eso dice algo de
Jesús que lo identifica con la Divinidad. Nos
dice algo de su naturaleza. Al decir que Él es
La Resurrección y la Vida en efecto dice que
in esencia Él es la fuente de la vida eterna para
nosotros. Esas palabras son una revelación.

Jesus wanted likewise for Martha to make a
commitment He evokes a response. He wants her
to say it with her lips. Likewise, without
saying it with the lips, we are somewhat less
than completely committed. We are lacking
salvation in its fullness. Isaiah 2816 says,
One who believes in him will not be put to
shame. And Romans 109 says If you confess
with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe
in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved.

Jesús en cambio quería que Marta hiciera su
entrega. Él invoca una respuesta. Él quiere
que ella diga algo con sus labios. Igualmente
nosotros, sin decirlo con los labios, estamos
menos que completamente entregados. Nos
falta salvación en su plenitud. Isaías 2816
dice Cualquiera que crea en él no será
avergonzado. Y Romanos 109 dice Si

When Jesus saw Mary weeping, and the Jews who
came with her also weeping, he was deeply moved
in spirit and troubled, and he wept. When
they come to the tomb, it was a cave, Jesus
says Take away the stone. He lifted up
his eyes to the Father in heaven, thanking him
for having heard his prayer. (This is
characteristic of the prayers of Jesus).

Cuando Jesús vio a María llorando, y a los
Judíos que vinieron con ella también llorando,
fue conmovido profundamente, y lloró. Cuando
llegaron a la tumba, era una cueva, tapada con
una piedra. Quiten la piedra dijo Jesús.
Levantó sus ojos al Padre celestial, dándole
gracias por oír sus oraciones. (Esto es
característico de la oración de Jesús).

I know that you hear me always, but because of
those standing by, I have said this, that they
may believe you sent me. He cries out with a
loud voice Lazarus, come out. And
Lazarus comes out, his hands and feet bound
with bandages. Jesus says Unbind him, and
let him go free.

Yo sé que me escuchas siempre, pero lo digo por
razón de los que están cerca, que ellos también
crean que tu me has enviado. Luego grito con
voz fuerte Lázaro, sal. Y Lázaro salió,
sus manos y las piernas atadas con vendas.
Jesús dijo Desátenlo, y déjenle que ande.

By these words, St. Agustin (Sermon 673)
says the church has been given the job of
unbinding people from their sins in confession.
Remember he said Whatever you bind on earth
shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you
loose on earth, shall be loosed in heaven
(Matthew 1619). When you despise Christ, you
lie dead when you confess, you come forth.
For what is it to come forth, but to come out,
as it were, from your hiding place and showing
yourself.

Por estas palabras, San Agustín dice (Sermón
673) que la iglesia es concedida la obra de
desatar al pueblo de Dios de sus pecados en la
confesión. Recuerden que dijo Lo que ates en
la tierra será atado en el cielo, y lo que
desates en la tierra, será desatado en el cielo
(Mateo 1619). Cuando desprecias a Cristo,
estas muerto.... cuando te confiesas, te
presentas antes de la Iglesia. Sales de la tumba
de donde estabas escondido.

But you cannot make this confession unless God
moves you to do it. When you do it by crying
with a loud voice that means He is calling you
with abundant grace. It takes courage to be a
Christian. When you cry out in a loud voice,
you are acting with greater conviction.

Pero no puedes hacer esto si Dios no te lo
concede hacerlo. Cuando le haces clamando en
alta voz, quiere decir que Dios té esta llamando
con abundante gracia. Toma valor ser Cristiano.
Cuando clamas a voz alta, estas actuando con
mayor convicción.

When you go to confession, the Lord sets you
free from your sins. In Luke 418 Jesus
proclaimed that is what the Spirit of God in him
was doing. He was being anointed to preach good
news to the poor. He was being sent to proclaim
release to the captives !

Cuando vas a confesarte, el Señor te libera de
tus pecados. En Lucas 418, Jesús proclamó
que eso era precisamente la razón por la cual fue
ungido. Fui ungido para proclamar las buenas
nuevas a los pobres. Fui mandado a proclamar
la libertad a los cautivos!
