Title: Noah

1
Noah The Movie
  • Is it Biblical?

2
Noah The Movie
  • A movie that has received mixed reviews from the
    religious world (no surprise)
  • Mixed reviews among brethren also ???

3
Noah The Movie
  • Do I have to see it to discuss it in this sermon?
  • Do I have to partake of a particular sin to be
    able to preach against it?
  • While I somewhat support a secular society that
is willing to proclaim the God of the Bible
  • But not like this movie!

4
Noah The Movie
  • This movie makes a mockery of what the Bible
    teaches about Noah.
  • The film is inspired by the story of Noah. While
artistic license has been taken, we believe that
this film is true to the essence, values and
integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of
faith for millions of people worldwide. The
biblical story of Noah can be found in the book
    of Genesis.

5
Noah The Movie
  • Director Darren Aronofsky
  • An atheist, raised in a Jewish household (he said
Im godless) who in an interview with The New
Yorker said of this movie, Noah is the least
biblical biblical film ever made.He told IFC
news in June 2011 of the account of Noah, I
dont think its a very religious story

Noah is this in the Bible ???

15
Lessons from the Biblical Noah
  • Gen. 69-10, 71 Heb. 117, Noah was a righteous
man. He was not conflicted, obsessive or
    homicidal.
  • 2 Pet. 25, Noah was a preacher of righteousness.
He warned the world desired them to repentThe
people didnt want to cf. Luke 1726-27

16
Lessons from the Biblical Noah
  • Gen. 617-18, God loved the world. He continued
His covenant with Noah. Warning Noah was an act
    of mercy and grace.
  • 1 Pet. 320-21, The ark is a type of our
    salvation.

17
Merchandising the gospel
  • DO NOT rely on an ungodly world to promote the
    gospel.
  • They will ALWAYS create God in their image!
  • Noah the movie has elements of Gnosticism,
    Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah), Theistic evolution,
    the occult (spells)

18
Merchandising the gospel
  • DO NOT rely on an ungodly world to promote the
    gospel.
  • The world wants one thing with such efforts
    MONEY! Possible anti-Christian agenda.
  • Warnings 2 Cor. 1113-15, 2 Pet. 21-3
  • Ephesians 511

19
Merchandising the gospel
  • Are such efforts a good starting point for
    dialogue about the Bible?
  • Possibly, BUT
  • Should we endorse such gross misapplication of
    scriptural accounts.
  • WHY do we need to crawl into the den of the enemy
    to proclaim the gospel?

20
Merchandising the gospel
  • Are such efforts a good starting point for
    dialogue about the Bible?
  • Far too many believers will sell their
birthright for a mess of pottage (cf. Heb.
    1216)
  • The mantra of much of Christianity today is
    compromise.

21
Merchandising the gospel
  • Are such efforts a good starting point for
    dialogue about the Bible?
  • IF you use anything other than the gospel to
teach the gospel there WILL BE problems!

22
Merchandising the gospel
  • Are such efforts a good starting point for
    dialogue about the Bible?
  • We ARE commanded to teach others Mark 1615,
    Acts 84, 1 Pet. 315
  • The best way to do this is by example Matt.
    513-16, Phil. 214-16
  • Do I have to see and endorse movies like Noah to
    start a dialogue?

Do NOT be ashamed of the Gospel and dont let the
world shame you into compromise!
23
Merchandising the gospel
  • When we turn the Bible into entertainment
  • We live in an entertainment driven society! It
has become a part of the fabric of many churches.
  • Worship and evangelism has NEVER been about being
    entertained!

24
Merchandising the gospel
  • When we turn the Bible into entertainment
  • Man well intentioned think that you can get the
message out with dramas, movies, novels, etc.
    BUT

25
Merchandising the gospel
  • When we turn the Bible into entertainment
  • When inaccurate it can cause people, especially
critics to question accuracy of the Bible
    accounts
  • It minimizes the actual word of God into sound
bites and excludes important details in accounts

26
Merchandising the gospel
  • When we turn the Bible into entertainment
  • Sometimes these dramatic interpretations become
the perceived truth especially by the lazy who
will not investigate for themselves 2 Tim.
    215, Acts 1711
  • An even greater concern when only off by a
    little!

27
Merchandising the gospel
  • Making merchandise of the gospel
  • Merchandising is everywhere! Most of it is for
profit ventures! This is what Hollywood is now
    experimenting with.
  • Is this what the gospel is about?
  • John 216

28
Merchandising the gospel
  • Making merchandise of the gospel
  • Should we sell the gospel?
  • Matt. 108, 2 Pet. 23, 1 Tim. 63-5
  • Is it wrong to make a profit on selling a book,
    etc.? No! (1 Cor. 94-7, 14)
  • But what we are witnessing is totally different
    than that!

29
Let us strive to live in a manner pleasing to Him!
  • That means, we must study and obey His word!
