Snow Removal Prioritization
  • We collect data on where and under what
conditions slips, trips, or falls occur and then
take action based on the trends we see. For
example we see that many of the incidents occur
where the foot traffic converges at the entrances
to the building. See on the diagram the
concentric curves that emanate out from the main
employee entrances to our plant. We find the
small curves toward the centers represent the
areas of greatest risk so we are especially
diligent about salt sand and make sure we clean
those areas first and keep them cleared during a
storm. Youll see weve color-coded our roads and
sidewalks according to the priority in which they
are treated and cleared around the property. The
first priority is always to get the main roads /
pathways cleared so that emergency response
vehicles can gain access to the buildings and
then we go from there. We think its important to
have a prioritized plan and that workers follow
standard work during a winter storm event and
that this in the long run will make the program
    more effective.
  •
  • See attached also the spreadsheet we use
in conjunction w/ the diagram (which we post each
autumn and populate w/ red pushpins to mark the
location of each slip, trip or fall). Using this
spreadsheet we record the pertinent information
like weather conditions, footwear, etc. Something
we find is that often falls occur in shady spots
and on inclines (up or down) so be especially
    attentive there.
  •
  • Listen to the weather forecasts well in
advance to determine if it makes sense to plow
sometimes its better to leave the snow on the
ground if freezing rain or sleet is forecast to
follow immediately after the snow or if you think
you wont be able to complete the snow removal
AND get the salt down before the changeover. This
will make you enormously unpopular but the odds
are that far fewer people will fall on snow than
    on glare ice.
  •
  • Make sure to repair paved surfaces,
curbing, catch basins pot holes in the spring
and do an annual inspection each autumn of the
    same things.
