Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music Therapy

• Purpose
• Gain access to unconscious
• Reduce defenses
• Gain insight, creativity and problem solving
• Usually twenty or fewer sessions

Procedure

• 4 Phases
• Prelude or preliminary discussion
• Induction
• Music Imagery
• Postlude or Integration

Prelude or Preliminary Discussion

• Discuss recent conflicts, stressors or concerns
• Therapist establishes and maintains rapport
• Builds a line of supportive contact.

Induction

• Therapist uses a variety of methods to promote
  deep relaxation
• Deep breathing exercises
• Relieving tension in various muscles

Music Imagery

• Main focus of session
• 30-40 minutes of listening
• Client
• Verbally describes thoughts, feelings, perceived
  images
• Therapist
• Provide nondirective verbal intervention
• Help client fully explore and describe experiences

Postlude or Integration

• Therapist helps client review, integrate
• Make meaning without providing interpretations
