Background

• High of young women in prison
• High of women with addiction issues
• High of women with mental health problems
• Women in prison for minor offences including non
  payment of fines

Key Objectives

• Provide a specialist service for women subject to
  the criminal justice service
• Provide a safe environment in which women can
  address offending behaviour
• Tackle the underlying causes of offending
  behaviour
• Help women avert crisis in their lives
• Enable women move on and reintegrate into society

• Turning Point Scotland and NHS partnership
• Residential Unit (12 women )
• Day Service ( 60 women)
• Range of Psycho/social interventions
• Range of medical interventions

2010 Evaluation

• Evaluation Aimed
• to examine in more detail the outcomes of the
  service in relation to its impact on sentencing
  patterns ,rates of reconviction, the uptake of
  mainstream services as well as other soft
  outcomes.

The evaluation Findings

• Offending reduced by 31
• Offences of dishonesty 44
• For every 1. invested a potential to save 2.50
  
• Potentially 4.72m per year on cost to society

Women said .

• I always found it hard to cuddle or to tell them
  I was having a bad day -I can tell them I am
  having a bad day now and they leave me alone
  before I was like a volcano I would have
  erupted and got angry I know how to use the
  tools now ,before I would have went for a drink
  -went for milk and came back after 3 days 45yrs

Finally ..

• I am happy doing my course in the 218,and all the
  doors in my house are opened, see like when I was
  using they werent allowed in and the doors were
  shut and all my weans hate it when the doors are
  shut but the atmosphere is all love and
  happiness now. Its amazing because its only me
  that got treatment its only me thats changing
  my life and its affecting the whole house, the
  whole family 43yrs
