11
Focus on WritingThe Sentence..p. 13
  • Look at the top of page 13 of your
    textbook..lets analyze items a, b, c and d
  • Abdullah worked for a big camera company for
    years.
  • My friend in Boston.
  • Hes tired.
  • Teaches mathematics to students at a good college
    in Massachusetts.
  • which ones are sentences?
  • Which are NOT sentences? How do you know?

12
Focus on WritingThe Sentence..p. 13
  • Every sentence in English has a subject and a
    verb.
  • e.g. He works. They play.
  • subject verb subject verb
  • A sentence may have only a subject and a verb,
but usually, there are other words in the
    sentence.
  • e.g. - He works for an employment agency / at
    the camera shop.
  • - They play basketball at the club every
    Saturday.

13
Focus on WritingThe Sentence..p. 13
  • The Subject
  • The subject is the person or thing the sentence
is 'about'. Often (but not always) it will be the
first part of the sentence. The subject will
usually be a noun or a noun phrase (a noun and
the words, such as adjectives, that modify it)
    followed by a verb.
  • - He works for an employment agency / at
    the camera shop.
  • - They play basketball at the club every
    Saturday.

14
Focus on WritingThe Sentence..p. 13
  • In commands, we do not say or write the subject
but the subject of the sentence will be always
    understood as YOU
  • e.g. Answer the want ads. YOU answer the want
    ads.
  • Subjects come before the verb and often come at
    the beginning of the sentence
  • e.g. Saeed told me it was a great job.
  • subject verb

15
Focus on WritingThe Sentence..p. 13
  • Subjects can be one word or many words..
  • e.g. Saeed and Jack told me it was a great job.
  • subject verb
  • They told me it was a great job.
  • subject verb

16
Focus on WritingThe Sentence..p. 13
  • Subjects cannot be repeated
  • We cannot say for example
  • Saeed he told me it was a great job.
  • In this case, we will have a subject and a
pronoun referring to the same subject for one
    verb. This is not correct.
  • This is different from saying for instance
  • Saeed and Ahmed told me it was a great job.
  • In this case, we have two different people/doers
performing the same verb. This is OK

17
Focus on WritingDescriptive Adjectives..p. 16
  • Descriptive Adjectives
  • Examples of descriptive adjectives in red
  • yellow banana, tall man, wide door, honest woman,
    stormy sky
  • Descriptive Adjectives come after verb to be..
  • He is tall.
  • The banana is yellow.

18
Focus on WritingDescriptive Adjectives..p. 16
  • Descriptive Adjectives
  • Descriptive Adjectives may come before the noun
they describe..In this case , we use the articles
    a, an or the
  • She is a smart girl.
  • He is an important writer.
  • The new teacher is in class.
  • A , an or the are not used
  • When we do not use nouns after the
    adjective..e.g. Ali is smart.

19
Focus on WritingPossessive Adjectives..p. 16
  • A possessive adjective is usually used to
describe a noun, and it comes before it, like
    other adjectives
  • Possessive Adjectives My, your, his, her, its,
    our, their
  • When we use a possessive adjective, we do not use
the articles a, an or the..
  • e. g. My car is bigger than her car.

20
Possessive Adjectives..p. 16
Subject pronoun Possessive adjective
