Horizon 2020 overview Craig Sharp National
Contact Point Nanotechnologies, advanced
materials and advanced manufacturing and
processing - NMP Craig.Sharp_at_tsb.gov.uk
2
What are National Contact Points?
  • National Contact Points (NCPs) are publicly
funded (many by the Technology Strategy Board)
to provide advice and assistance to UK
participants within specific areas of Horizon
2020. This includes the Legal Financial NCP
    service.
  • All member states have NCPs
  • http//ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/p
    age/nationalcontactpoint
  • (or just search on NCP Horizon 2020 or
    similar..)

3
NCP support
  • Feedback to/from Commission on work programmes
  • Distribution of documentation (forms,
    guidelines, etc.)
  • Clarification of documentation and rules
  • Guidance on choosing thematic priorities and
    instruments
  • Advice on administrative procedures and
    contractual issues
  • Feedback on proposals
  • Assistance in partner search
  • - through theme specific databases or across the
network of other Member State NCPs
  • - through network support (EEN, KTN, etc)
  • Some feedback on results..

Horizon 2020
  • Successor to current Seventh Framework Programme
    for Research, Technological Development and
    Demonstration Activities (FP7)
  • Will also incorporate European Institute of
Innovation and Technology (EIT) and innovation
elements of CIP under one single programme
  • Funded by general EU budget 2014-20
    Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF)
  • 3rd largest programme after Structural Funds and
    CAP
  • Timeline for agreement on Horizon 2020 is
    dependent on MFF agreement

8
Whats new?
  • A single programme bringing together three
separate programmes (FP7, CIP and EIT).
  • Integration of European research and innovation
    funding, from research to retail.
  • Excellence as the key funding criterion.
  • Easier access for participants through
    simplification of rules for participation.

9
Company participation
Large companies With existing RD activity or
that which could be stimulated and leveraged
through Horizon 2020. Hi-tech SMEs Spin outs
from universities or firms with hi-tech and
knowledge based products and in-house RD
capability. Mid-tech SMEs With some RD
activity or that which could be stimulated and
leveraged through Horizon 2020.
10
Resources needed to apply (CRD areas)
  • As a partner
  • Typically 2-3 person weeks with no previous
    experience required
  • As a leader
  • Typically 2-3 person months with experience
    highly recommended
  • i.e. Go in as a partner first to learn the ropes!
