How many sources do you need?
  • Sources Requirement 70- 100 pts.
  • Works Cites Page with at least six sources 70-
    100 pts.
  • 6 sources70 points C 7 sources80 B
  • 8-9 sources A- to A
  • Novel Source (10 pts.) historical fiction novel
    of your choice
  • Reference Source (10 pts. each) Encyclopedia or
    reference text f/ reference room of Chaffey
    library and Ontario City Library.
  • 2(minimum) Non-Fictional/Informational Text (10
    pts. each) Book checked out from library,
    magazine article, published journal, etc.
  • Internet Resources (10pts each) an article from
    a reputable source online.
  • Visual Media (10 pts. each) Video/ Film
  • Audio Media (10 pts. each) Song lyrics inspired
    by novels theme or relating to the time period
    or similar issues experienced in the time period

When you are at the Chaffey Library
  • You will need to have 5 areas ready to research
    and prepare your note/source cards. Also, look
    for your map.
  • Go to the computer and search for information
    about your topic
  • If the book has a number, it is a nonfiction book
    that you may check out.
  • If it has an R on the call , then it is only
    for you to use in the library. You may not check
    these out.

Research Tips
  • When you are at the aisle where your book is
    located, look aroundyou might find other books
    that pertain to your subject!
  • Nonfiction books have the same call numbers as
    reference books.
  • Example If you found Civil War books in R973.7
    (reference section), then the same types of books
    will be found in the nonfiction area.
  • Be patient! This will take time

  • You will keep the information that you find about
    your books and websites on SOURCE CARDS .
  • You will then write down information from the
    text on NOTECARDS

  • You need 3x5 cards
  • You use them to document which online sources you
    might use for your project

Types of Sources Primary, Secondary, Tertiary
  • PRIMARY
  • Also called firsthand documents
  • They include ORIGINAL writing or records
  • Example Diaries
  • Interviews (legal proceedings, personal,
    telephone, e-mail)
  • Letters
  • Original Documents (i.e. birth certificate or a
    trial transcript)
  • Patents
  • Photographs
  • Proceedings of Meetings, Conferences and
    Symposia.
  • Survey Research (such as market surveys and
    public opinion polls)

  • TWO of your sources must be primary

Secondary Sources
  • Secondary sources are accounts written after the
    fact with the benefit of hindsight. They are
    interpretations and evaluations of primary
    sources. Secondary sources are not evidence, but
    rather commentary on and discussion of evidence.
    They are usually published by scholars and
    professors in academic publications and books.
