1
Its a MYSTERY!
  • A Peek into the World of Sherlock Holmes
  • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

2
Elements of Mystery
  • THE CRIME IS PLANNED. Generally novels of the
mystery genre begin with the planning of a crime.
Most of the novels do not have crimes that happen
    by accident
  • THE CRIME IS DISCOVERED. Someone enters a room
and sees a body, a person is missing without a
trace, or some other mode of discovery is
employed. This spurs on the action.
  • THE SLUETH ENTERS. This is when the detective
arrives on the scene. The detective's job is to
    discover who committed the crime
  • THE DETECTIVE DETERMINES IF THERE ARE ANY
WITNESSES. An essential point of a novel, this
helps the detective with a place to start.
  • THE REVELANCY OF EACH PIECE OF EVIDENCE IS
CONSIDERED. The sleuth looks at what they are
presented with and begins to decide if those
    clues are important.
  • SUSPECTS AND MOTIVES ARE CONSIDERED. This is the
part of a mystery where the detective begins to
pinpoint suspects and the reasons for the crime.
Sometimes all of the clues appear to point to one
person, but indeed, that person is not the
culprit. They act as a distraction- a red
herring. This then causes the sleuth to begin at
    the beginning.
  • THE SLUETH FORMS A HYPOTHESIS. In a mystery novel
the detective comes up with a reason why the
crime was committed and who did it. Such a theory
is a hypothesis. Then the detective character
will try to prove it with further clues
  • A CHASE SCENE MAY OCCUR. Generally this happens
in movies. It is when the suspect, or
perpetrator, runs from the police. These are
    generally high action scenes.
  • REASON MUST PREVAIL. The suspect must have a
reason for committing the crime, the detective
can not accuse someone without them having no
reason. This leads to a lack in conclusion of a
    mystery. It leaves unanswered questions
  • JUSTICE SHOULD PREVAIL. Although readers tend to
enjoy a happy ending, sometimes justice (what is
    right) does not prevail

  • BRIEF TIMELINE FOR NOVEL
  • Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in
    Edinburgh, Scotland
  • 1886 creates the characters of Sherlock Holmes
    and his assistant Dr. Watson
  • Strand magazine published the first episode of
The Hound of the Baskervilles in August of 1901.
The magazine's circulation instantly rose by
    thirty thousand copies
  • The novel became, and is to this day, a
    worldwide sensation.
  • The novel that Conan Doyle described as "a real
creeper" was an instant success. This book
    combines elements of mystery, superstition,
    suspense, and horror

  • THE GREAT DETECTIVE
  • Doyle vacationed in Norfolk and while relaxing
with friends they spoke of many things.  The
focus of many of their conversations were about
the local myths and legends.  Conan Doyle was
especially interested in the tales of ghostly
hounds that roamed the moors (open fields) of
England. This prompted Doyle to develop and write
the popular novel, Hound of the Baskervilles
