Title: Unit 1 Love
1Unit 1 Love
2i. What is love? Love is a universal emotion
that expresses itself in very culture, a
permanent theme being studied and explored
throughout the human history.
3 In its narrow sense, love is a deep feeling
of fondness, affection that grows between two
people. eg. Yet if two hearts are ever
steadfast, Though parted, they are together
Night and day! ???????,???????? (?? ???)
4 Broadly speaking, love can be viewed as a
feeling of brotherhood and goodwill towards other
people or a strong liking for something. eg.
Ask not what your country can do for you ask
what you can do for your country.
John F. Kennedy
Do you love life? Then, never waste time,
for thats the stuff life is made of. Benjamin
Franklin
5ii. Motherly Love and Fatherly Love Work in
groups to discuss whether there are differences
between motherly and fatherly loves. Words and
Phrases You May Use unconditional ????
fulfill ?? live up to ????? deserve ??
longing ?? represent ?? discipline ??
obedience ?? acquire ?? expectation ?????
6Sample Motherly love by its very nature
is unconditional. Mother loves the newborn infant
because it is her child, not because the child
has fulfilled any specific condition, or lived up
to any specific expectation. Unconditional love
corresponds in one of the deepest longings, not
only of the child, but of every human being on
the other hand, to be loved because of ones
merit, because one deserves it, always leaves
doubt maybe I did not please the person whom I
want to love me, maybe this or that--there is
always a fear that love could disappear.
Page1
7Furthermore, deserved love easily leaves a
bitter feeling that one is not loved for oneself,
that one is loved only because one pleases, that
one is, in the last analysis, not loved at all
but used. No wonder that we all cling to the
longing for motherly love, as children and also
as adults.     The relationship to father
is quite different. Mother is the home we come
from, she is nature, soil, the ocean father does
not represent any such natural home.
Page2
8He has little connection with the child in the
first years of his life, and his importance for
the child in this early period cannot be compared
with that of mother. But while father does not
represent the natural world, he represents the
other pole of human existence the world of
thought, of man-made things, of law and order, of
discipline, of travel and adventure. Father is
the one who teaches the child, who shows him the
road into the world. Fatherly love is conditional
love. Its principle is 1 love you because you
fulfill my expectations, because you do your
duty, because you are like me.
Page3
9In conditional fatherly love we find, as with
unconditional motherly love, a negative and a
positive aspect. The negative aspect is the very
fact that fatherly love has to be deserved that
it can be lost if one does not do what is
expected. In the nature of fatherly love lies the
fact that obedience becomes the main virtue, that
disobedience is the main sin--and its punishment
the withdrawal of fatherly love. The positive
side is equally important. Since his love is
conditional, I can do something to acquire it, I
can work for it his love is not outside of my
control as motherly love is.
The end
10iii. Role-play Love is an eternal theme in
literature works and movies. Many classic works
are known for their thorough understanding and
touching description of love. Among others, Romeo
and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice and Titanic
are typical examples. Here is an act abridged
from the movie Titanic, read and then work in
groups to play the roles. You can also work on
some other versions of the same or even a
different play.
11Part 1 Listening-in
1. A person with a good heart seeks for a
reward. 2. There is a relationship between
having a good heart and attracting and retaining
beautiful love. 3. The birds of the same
feather like to gather in large crowds. 4.
People with good hearts can easily become
partners. 5. Your good heart for others will
help you gain a beautiful love.

12Part 1 Listening-in
A good heart works for the good of others
without necessarily seeking a reward. This is
called self-sacrifice. But how does having a
good heart relate to attracting and retaining
beautiful love? Of course, you know that
birds of the same feather flock together and that
like poles attract each other.
13Part 1 Listening-in
This simply means that if you display
beautiful love to others, you will attract a
partner who is beautiful at heart a partner who
has a beautiful heart.
14Part 2 Listen and Answer
1. Why didnt the old woman see Dr. Barrett of
St. Louis? 2. Why had the old woman immediately
married? 3. Why did the old womans school-mates
never answer?
Because he had left for home that morning.
She wanted to show him that she did not care.
They had been dead 40 years.
15Part 2 Listen and Answer 1
She was 82 and living in Keoluk when,
surprisingly, she insisted upon attending a
convention of old settlers of the Mississippi
Valley. All the way there, and it was some
distance, she was young again with excitement and
eagerness. At the hotel she asked immediately for
Dr. Barrett of St. Louis.
16Part 2 Listen and Answer 2
He had left for home that morning and would
not be back, she was told. She turned away, the
fire all gone from her, and asked to go home.
Once there she sat silent and thinking for many
days, then told us that when she was 18 she had
loved a young medical student with all her heart.
There was a misunderstanding and he left the
country
17Part 2 Listen and Answer 3
she had immediately married, to show him that she
did not care. She had never seen him since and
then she had read in a newspaper that he was
going to attend the old settlers convention.
Only three hours before we reached that hotel he
had been there, she mourned.
18Part 2 Listen and Answer 4
She had kept that pathetic burden in her
heart 64 years without any of us suspecting it.
Before the year was out, her memory began to
fail. She would write letters to school-mates who
had been dead 40 years and wonder why they never
answered. Four years later she died.
19Part 3 Bridge the Cultural Gap
The term love in English covers many
things, including erotic love, love between
parent and child, brotherly love, etc. Christian
love can be (1) __________ on love between parent

27iv. Read and think The Apple Tree A long time
ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy
loved to come and lay around it everyday. He
climbed to the tree top, ate the apples, took a
nap under the shadow... He loved the tree and the
tree loved to play with him. Time went by... the
little boy had grown up and he no longer played
around the tree everyday. One day, the boy came
back to the tree and he looked sad.
Page1
28Come and play with me, the tree asked the boy.
I am no longer a kid, I dont play around trees
anymore. The boy replied, I want toys. I need
money to buy them. Sorry, but I dont have
money...but you can pick all my apples and sell
them. So, you will have money. The boy was so
excited. He grabbed all the apples on the tree
and left happily. The boy never came back after
he picked the apples. The tree was sad.
Page2
29 One day, the boy returned and the tree was so
excited. Come and play with me, the tree said.
I dont have time to play. I have to work for my
family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help
me? Sorry, but I dont have a house. But you
can chop off my branches to build your house. So
the boy cut all the branches off the tree and
left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy
but the boy never came back since then. The tree
was again lonely and sad.
Page3
30 One hot summer day, the boy returned and the
tree was delighted. Come and play with me! the
tree said. I am sad and getting old. I want to
go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a
boat? Use my trunk to build your boat. You can
sail far away and be happy. So the boy cut the
tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and
never showed up for a long time. Finally, the boy
returned after he left for so many years.
Page4
31 Sorry, my boy But I dont have anything for
you anymore. No more apples for you... the tree
said. I dont have teeth to bite. the boy
replied. No more trunk for you to climb on. I
am too old for that now. the boy said. I really
cant give you anything ... the only thing left
is my dying roots. the tree said with tears. I
dont need much now, just a place to rest. I am
tired after all these years.
Page5
32The boy replied. Good! Old tree roots is the
best place to lean on and rest. Come, Come sit
down with me and rest. The boy sat down and the
tree was glad and smiled with tears.......
This is a story of everyone. The tree is our
parent. When we were young, we loved to play with
Mom and Dad... When we grown up, we left them,
and only came to them when we need something or
when we are in trouble.
The End
33A good heart If I have no other qualities, I
can succeed with love alone. Without it I will
fail though I possess all the knowledge and
skills of the world. Og Mandian If you
would be loved, love and be lovable. Benjamin
Franklin A good heart can bring strength and
confidence. A good heart can work wonders in
ones life.
34V. Enjoy a song You Raise Me Up by Westlife
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary When
troubles come and my heart burdened be Then, I
am still and wait here in the silence, Until you
come and sit awhile with me. You raise me up, so
I can stand on mountains You raise me up, to
walk on stormy seas
35I am strong, when I am on your shoulders You
raise me up... to more than I can be. You raise
me up, so I can stand on mountains You raise me
up, to walk on stormy seas I am strong, when I
am on your shoulders You raise me up... to more
than I can be.

62My Opinion on Campus Love Campus love isnt a
newly-born phenomenon. Some people are strongly
against it. First of all, undergraduates are
neither fully psychologically mature nor able to
assume the responsibility, especially freshmen
and sophomores. Second, they may indulge in it,
thus influence their study, which isnt rare.
Third, some just take advantage of it to kill
time, avoid boredom with much time at their own
disposal, etc.
63 Though some people are opposed to campus
love, some support it. They think this love can
help them escape from loneliness resulting from
their separating from families. Besides, lovers
are good companions to help solve problems in
their daily life. In my view, campus love is
natural. If one meets a suitable boy or girl, and
if they are willing to strengthen their
relationship, just let the love go. But they must
look before they leap, because love needs
responsibility for the other. And they should
know the most important thing in college is to
study, so they never waste more time in talking
love.
