About 140 million Americans are bracing for a
polar blast that's barreling across the country
this week, shattering records along the way. Much
of the United States will see the coldest
temperatures in almost 20 years, the National
Weather Service said. Some cities will experience
temperatures 30 to 50 degrees below average. By
Wednesday, nearly half the nation will shudder in
temperatures of zero or lower. The extreme
weather has prompted school cancellations Monday
in many major school districts, including St.
Louis, Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis and
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. More than 2,400 flights
have been canceled within, into or out of the
United States for Monday. That's on top of the
3,800 flights canceled on Sunday. The plunging
temperatures and wind chill are a dangerous
recipe for rapid frostbite or hypothermia.

• Jahi McMath was released to her mother yesterday.
  Doctors in California declared the 13-year-old
  brain dead after tonsil surgery last month.
  She's been on a ventilator since then. A fierce
  court battle unfolded between devastated
  relatives fighting to keep her on the ventilator
  and doctors arguing that she's already dead.
  Though her destination was not disclosed, a New
  York facility says it's ready to care for her.
• This year's flu season just keeps going, and
  going. The number of states reporting widespread
  flu activity has skyrocketed to 25. Folks in the
  South should especially be careful. The most
  severe activity is in those states.
• Eccentric basketball star Dennis Rodman and
  several other former NBA players are on their way
  to take part in a controversial basketball game
  in North Korea on the birthday of the country's
  young, unpredictable leader Kim Jong-Un. The
  friendly contest is planned for Wednesday, when
  Kim is believed to turn 31. In addition to
  Rodman, Kenny Anderson, Cliff Robinson, Vin
  Baker, Craig Hodges, Doug Christie, and Charles
  D. Smith will apparently play against the North
  Korean Senior National Team.
