Title: The Doctrines of the Trinity
1The Doctrines of the TrinityThe Deity of Christ
as revealed in Johns prologue
2Origin of Human Personhoodand Nature
3Pre-existence Theory
(early 2nd century)
Teaches that all human souls (the entire
immaterial part) were created at the beginning of
creation, prior to the creation of Adam. These
souls are enjoined to the material upon
conception.
(storehouse of souls)
Objections
- The Bible never speaks of a creation of men prior
to Adam. - Demands that these souls be incorrupt free of
the curses of the Fall. - Contradicts the doctrine of Original Sin that
all persons were in Adam, committing the sin of
Adam.
4Creationism Theory
Claims that the soul (the entire immaterial part)
is directly created by God and enjoined to the
material substance at conception.
Objections
- These post-fall souls would have to be created
corrupt. - Requires on-going creation of the immaterial part
of every person. Yet, God performed all His
creative acts during the six-day creation and
rested from creating beginning on the seventh day.
5Traducian Position
The immaterial as well as the material part of
man comes into being by human generation.
God created. Man procreates.
Arguments from Scripture
- Only once did God breathe into mans nostrils the
breath of life. Thereafter, man is to reproduce
himself. - Accounts for the transmission of personality
characteristics within family lineages. - Agrees with the biblical doctrines of Original
Sin, and the passing of the Adamic nature to all
persons.
6pro-created by parents
Personhood and nature (material immaterial)
originate at conception
Job 31.15 Did not He who made me in the womb
make my slave, and the same one fashion us in
the womb? Psalm 139.13-14 For Thou didst form
my inward parts Thou didst weave me in my
mothers womb. I will give thanks to Thee, for I
am fearfully and wonderfully made wonderful are
Thy works, and my soul knows it very
well. Isaiah 44.24 Thus says the LORD, your
Redeemer, and the one who formed you from the
womb
7pro-created by parents
Personhood and nature (material immaterial)
originate at conception,
Jeremiah 1.5 Before I formed you in the womb I
knew you, and before you were born I consecrated
you Luke 1.15 and he will be filled with the
Holy Spirit, while yet in his mothers womb.
(earliest possible stage) Zechariah 12.1 Thus
declares the LORD who stretches out the heavens,
lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the
spirit of man within him
8Summary
God directly created Adams material parts. Then
He breathed His life into Adam completing his
being.
Genesis 2.7 Then the LORD God formed man of dust
from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils
the breath of life and man became a living being
(wholeness of being).
Having provided the physical capability the
context of the marriage covenant, God commanded
the man woman to increase abundantly.
When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years,
he became the father of a son in his own
likeness, according to his image
9Command Given to All Before and After the Fall
and the Flood
Genesis 1.28 And God blessed them and God said
to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the
earth, and subdue it Genesis 9.1 And God
blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, Be
fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.
10All of our humanity (personhood and nature) is
entirely created at conception. This is not to
suggest that humans create apart from God.
Conception and development of a child is without
question the miraculous outworking of Gods
creative work sustained through His sovereign,
economic system of procreation. However, by
design He has given man the ability to initiate
this miracle. The command, enablement, and
responsibility of procreation was issued by God,
and remained in place after the Fall. This is
why and how the post-fall corruptness of man is
passed to every member of the human race.
Romans 5.12 Therefore, just as through one man
sin entered into the world, and death through
sin, and so death spread to all men, because all
sinned
11Reason for the Holy Spirit Conception
Some have assumed it necessary because of a
misunderstanding of Psalm 51.5
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in
sin my mother conceived me.
12Holy Spirit Conception (cont.)
If Joseph and Mary had conceived this child they
would have brought forth a man possessing human
personhood and human nature (as seen in Jesus
unbelieving brothers). By the Holy Spirits
miraculous conception, the Word, being the
personhood, was united with the human nature
supplied by Mary creating a complete human being
consisting of a human nature and also a divine
nature and divine personhood, yet without a human
personhood. Since all attributes are within the
human nature and personhood is simply
self-consciousness, absence of human personhood
makes Jesus no less human.
13The God-Man
Material
(flesh)
The eternal personhood who, at incarnation, is a
Son to the Father.
The Father
The Son
Common Divine Nature
Immaterial
The Holy Spirit
He has TWO natures, human and divine.
14Holy Spirit Conception (cont.)
Besides intrinsic reasons for the miraculous,
virginal conception, prophetic Scripture
required the virginal conception.
Isaiah 7.14 Therefore the Lord Himself will
give you a sign Behold, a virgin will be with
child and bear a son, and she will call His name
Immanuel. Matthew 1.20-21 Joseph, son of
David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your
wife for that which has been conceived in her is
of the Holy Spirit. And she will bear a Son and
you shall call His name Jesus.
15Holy Spirit Conception (cont.)
Luke 1.34-35 And Mary said to the angel, How
can this be, since I am a virgin? And the angel
answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit will
come upon you, and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you and for that reason the holy
offspring shall be called the Son of
God. Genesis 3.15 And I will put enmity between
you and the woman, and between your seed and her
seed
16Explanation of the Sinless Humanity of Christ
17The Bible states Jesus was sinless from
conception.
Luke 1.35 the holy offspring shall be called
the Son of God. 2 Cor. 5.21 He made Him who
knew no sin to be sin on our behalf Hebrews
4.15 but a High Priest who has been tempted
in all things as we are, yet without sin.. 1
Pet. 2.22 who committed no sin, nor was any
deceit found in his mouth 1 John 3.5 And you
know that He appeared in order to take away sins
and in Him there is no sin.
This being true, how was He conceived free of the
sin nature common to every descendant of Adam?
18Immaculate Conception.
The Roman Catholic Church answered this question
with their doctrine of
Originated by Pope Pius IX in the bull
Ineffabilis Deus (1854). The statement is We
declare, pronounce and define the doctrine that
maintains that the most Blessed Virgin Mary in
the first instant of her conception, by a unique
grace and privilege of the omnipotent God, and in
consideration of the merits of Christ Jesus the
Savior of the human race, was preserved free from
all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed
by God, and therefore must be firmly and
constantly held by all the faithful.
19Problems with Immaculate Conception
- No Scriptural support. Only 1 proof text offered
- Wrongly exalts Mary to the purity and sinlessness
from conception true only of Jesus. - If Mary had been conceived with an incorrupt
personhood and nature, she would be of the same
purity of the pre-fall Adam she would still be
alive today. Catholics answer Assumption of
Mary
Luke 1.28 the Angel said to her, Hail,
favored one! The Lord is with you.
November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII"By the authority
of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles
Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we
pronounce, declare, and define it to be a
divinely revealed dogma that the Immaculate
Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having
completed the course of her earthly life, was
assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.
20X Y Chromosome Theory
- Cells of males females each contain 23 pairs of
chromosomes - In females, all pairs are YY
- In males, the 23rd pair is XY
This theory states that the corrupt, Adamic
nature, being attached to the male XY pair is
thus carried, and passed through the generations
by each father that is, by his seed. Claim Not
having a biological father, Jesus was conceived
free of the Adamic nature.
21Problems with XY Chromosome Theory
If this were true, all females, since they dont
have the X chromosome would be free of the Adamic
nature. The X chromosome simply determines
gender. Being male, Jesus certainly has the X
chromosome. If it carried the sin nature, Jesus
would have the sin nature.
22Classical Christology
Claims the Holy Spirit purified the sinful nature
at conception.
Problem Implies Jesus nature was corrupt but
was corrected somewhere in the process.
23Personhood view of Jesus Sinless Humanity
Since Jesus is truly man, we must begin by
considering Adam in his original condition.
- Two key points
- Material (physical) parts of nature
- Immaterial (spiritual) parts of nature
Gods two-pronged penalty of death affected both
Adam was created with a perfect personhood which
gave him perfect God-consciousness/relationship
with God. This incorrupt personhood sustained his
incorrupt nature (immaterial parts).

25Personhood View (cont.)
At the Fall, Adams personhood was corrupted
which corrupted his mind, will, emotions,
conscious, appetites, etc. This is spiritual
death. This state of corruption IS the sin nature.

27Adams Physical Death
This death is separate and distinct from
spiritual death. It is not caused by the
corruption of the immaterial parts. Physical
death was introduced as part of the universal
curses upon all of creation.
Specifically, it is the effecting of mortality
upon Adams physical body. Both deaths comprise
the penalty of sin. Since the personhood and
nature are created at conception by the parents,
every descendant of Adam has been conceived --
- with a corrupt personhood, corrupt immaterial
parts of nature, - suffering the curse of death upon the physical
parts of nature.
28Explanation of the Sinless Humanity of Christ
Concerning Jesus spiritually
The Word provided the personhood, Mary provided a
normal human nature. Since His personhood was
without corruption, the human nature He took on
could not be corrupted. That which prevented the
corruption of His human nature was not that His
personhood was deity (purification idea), but
rather that His personhood was not corrupt,
thereby keeping His relationship to God pure and
unbroken like the first Adam.
29Explanation of the Sinless Humanity of Christ
Concerning Jesus physically
If His deity purified His humanity, the material
parts of His human nature would have also been
purified. This was not the case as the material
parts of His human nature were subjected to the
Falls curses like the first Adam. His material
body tired, thirsted, needed food, and of course
died. Being subject to the Falls curses does
not argue that Jesus had a sin nature. His human
body suffered the effects of the curse, though it
was not corrupted by a sin nature.
30Explanation of the Sinless Humanity of Christ
2 Cor. 5.21 He made Him who knew no sin to be
sin on our behalf
Having no sin, Jesus willingly experienced all
the suffering and limitations of sin upon man
even death. Hebrews 4.15 He was tempted in all
things as we are, yet without sin. His
temptations were not merely token temptations.
Fully deity He is fully man
real temptations, real sacrifice, real
victory, means real redemption!!!
31These things I have spoken to you, that in Me
you may have peace. In the world you have
tribulation, but take courage I have overcome
the world. JESUS
