Risk Assessments
  • Before undertaking any task, always identify the
    hazards and assess the risks. Then implement the
    measures required to remove or minimise the risk
    before starting work. Use the Risk Assessment
    Matrix (below) to assign a risk rating.

Risk Control
  • Where possible, Elimination of the hazard will be
    considered. Where elimination is not reasonably
    practicable, the risk will be controlled in
    accordance with the hierarchy of hazard controls
    (refer to below table)

Safe Work Procedures
  • Become familiar with safe work procedures
    developed for particular jobs
  • Ensure safe work procedures are easily accessible
  • Notify your Manager/Supervisor if there is a
    problem complying with the safe work procedure

Emergencies
  • Make note of the emergency number and keep it
    handy
  • Know who are your first aider/s and fire wardens
  • Be familiar with evacuation procedures and
    assembly/muster points for your area
  • Obey directions of building evacuation officers
    and DO NOT enter buildings if alarms are sounding

If you Detect a Fire
  1. Ensure you are safe.
  2. Warn anyone who might be in immediate danger
  3. Advise Fire Wardens of the fire and its location
  4. Dial the appropriate emergency number
  5. If trained, and if safe, extinguish or control
    the fire with the correct fire extinguisher
    (Refer to fire extinguisher guide)
  6. Secure important documents (if appropriate)
  7. Obey all instructions by the Fire Wardens
  8. Evacuate if directed. DO NOT USE LIFTS
  9. Remove unsafe footwear. Descend stairs calmly. Do
    not push

Medical Emergencies
  • Check for danger to yourself, the injured person
    and bystanders
  • Advise your first aider/s
  • Notify Emergency Services if required
  • Arrange guidance for Emergency Services
  • Assist where required
  • Prevent unqualified persons from treating or
    unnecessarily moving the injured person

Safety Signs
  • Blue signs are mandatory. You must comply with
    the requirements.
  • Red signs are prohibitive. You are prohibited
    from smoking in the workplace.

Safety Signs
  • Yellow signs are hazard warning signs. Alert you
    to hazards in the workplace.
  • Green signs are safety guidance. e.g. Guide you
    to first aid kits and emergency exits.

Protective Clothing
  • PPE provided must be worn
  • Report any damaged PPE to your Manager or
    Supervisor
  • Do not use the PPE unless you have had
    appropriate training and instruction in its use.
  • Observe any signage for the area that you are
    working in to see if there is any particular PPE
    that is required for known hazards.
  • Return PPE in a clean condition and store in the
    appropriate storage area

Machine Safety
  • Inspect machinery before you use it
  • Ensure guards are in place
  • Machines must be used in accordance with their
    design and intent and per manufacturers
    guidelines
  • Report faulty machines to your Manager/Supervisor

Safe Manual Handling
  • Assess the load to be lifted
  • Get help if needed
  • Use lifting equipment provided (e.g. trolleys)
  • Adopt safe lifting techniques
  • Assess your work area before you start work and
    identify ways to reduce the amount of bending and
    twisting

Safe lifting Technique
  • Plan the lift
  • Place the feet apart, balanced and stable base,
    leading leg forward where required
  • Adopt a good posture knees bent, back straight,
    chin tucked, shoulders level and same direction
    as hips
  • Get a firm and secure grip arms within boundary
    formed by legs
  • Dont jerk smooth movements and load control
  • Move the feet do not twist the trunk
  • Keep close to the load close to body trunk,
    heaviest side next to body trunk, slide the load
    towards you prior to lift
  • Where a load is on a trolley, push it rather than
    pulling

Chemical Safety
  • Keep quantities you are working with to the
    minimum amounts required.
  • Read the material safety data sheet for chemicals
    being used
  • Ensure containers are labelled
  • Read the warning label on containers and follow
    instructions
  • Always wash your hands after handling chemicals.
    Do not eat, drink or smoke in the workplace
  • Always dispose chemical waste correctly.
  • Follow safe storage principles for chemicals

Housekeeping
  • Assess your workspace/work area including the
    floors, aisles, workstation, equipment, storage
    and waste bins
  • Clean up spills immediately
  • Keep walkways emergency exits/fire
    extinguishers clear
  • Clean up regularly during the shift
  • Identify, report and control hazards before
    starting work
  • Turn equipment off after using it
  • Remove any unused materials

Hazard/Incident reporting and management
  • Report all hazards/incidents to your
    Manager/Supervisor
  • Document incidents on the Incident Report Form
  • If you are injured notify your Manager/Supervisor
    as soon as possible
  • Seek first aid or medical attention
  • Complete workers compensation requirements
  • Participate and cooperate with your
    rehabilitation program

  • Eat well and exercise regularly
  • Get enough sleep
  • Take time to relax
  • Never work or drive under the influence of
    alcohol or drugs
