Eliza Lucas Pinckney (1722-1793) Born in 1722 in
Antigua in the West Indies Attended school in
England where her favorite subject was
botany

In 1738 at the age of sixteen, Pinckney was left
alone in charge of three plantations near Charles
Town, South Carolina

In addition to experiments with flax, hemp and
silk as possible cash crops, Pinckney spent her
spare time perfecting strains of indigo that her
father brought her from the West Indies.  By
1742 she had perfected a process to successfully
produce indigo dye for export Changed the
economy of the Colonial South Within two years,
indigo became South Carolinas second best cash
crop behind rice, with 130,000 pounds exported
annually.

In 1744, she married Charles Pinckney, a
prominent planter and lawyer, when she was
twenty-two. They had four children. Three boys
and one girl. Two of her sons became great
national figures.  Charles Cotesworth Pinckney
was a signer of the United States Constitution
and Thomas Pinckney was the United States
Minister to Spain and to Great Britain.

After a life of professional and personal
success that far exceeded the limitations placed
on most colonial women, Eliza Lucas Pinckney died
of cancer on May 26, 1793. So highly thought of
was she for her determination and innovation that
President George Washington served as one of the
pall bearers at her funeral.
