1
Energy Types / Sources
BRMS 6th Grade Mrs. Bright (6-5.1)
2
6-5.1
  • Identify the sources and properties of heat,
    solar, chemical, mechanical, and electrical
    energy.

3
Nature of Energy
  • Energy can be in many forms!
  • You can hear energy as sound.
  • You can see energy as light.
  • And you can feel it as wind.

4
Nature of Energy
  • You use energy when you
  • hit a softball.
  • lift your book bag.
  • compress a spring.

5
Nature of Energy
  • Living organisms need energy for growth and
    movement.

6
Nature of Energy
  • Energy is involved when
  • A bird flies.
  • A bomb explodes.
  • Electricity flows in a wire.
  • Rain falls from the sky.

7
What is energy?
  • 1. Energy can be defined as the ability to cause
change in speed, direction, shape or temperature.

8
2. What are 5 forms of energy?
  • Heat
  • Solar
  • Chemical
  • Electrical
  • Mechanical

9
3. What are the two States of Energy?
  • All forms of energy exists in two main states
  • Kinetic (motion)
  • Potential (position)
  • These are know together as mechanical energy.

10
4. The Law of Conservation of Energy
  • Energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only
    change form.
  • The total amount of energy NEVER changes!!!!!

11
The STATES of ENERGYMechanical Energy
  • Potential Kinetic

12
States of Energy ENERGY OF MOTION
  • 1.Kinetic Energy is the energy of motion.
  • 2.If an object is NOT movingit doesnt have
    kinetic energy.

13
Kinetic Energy
  • o 3.The faster an object moves, the more kinetic
    energy it has.
  • A moving car has kinetic energy. If the car moves
faster, it has more kinetic energy.

14
Examples of Kinetic Energy
15
Kinetic Energy Assessment
  • True or False
  • ___4. Kinetic energy increases as an object moves
    faster.
  • ___5. Kinetic energy is due to motion.
  • ___6. A stalled car is an example of kinetic
    energy.

16
Potential Energy Energy of Position
  • 7. Potential Energy is stored energy.
  • In fuel,
  • In a battery
  • In food.
  • A wound up watch.
  • An arrow pulled back.
  • A book on a shelf.
  • A stretched rubber band
  • A compressed spring

17
Potential Energy
  • 8. Potential energy is related to the position
    of an object.
  • 9. Water behind a dam has potential energy
because it can fall down the dam. The higher the
object the greater the potential energy of the
    object.

20
Potential Energy Assessment
  • True or False
  • ____ 10. Potential energy is stored energy.
  • ____ 11. Potential energy is related to position.
  • ____ 12. An arrow flying through the air is an
    example of potential energy.
  • ____ 13. Potential energy decreases with height.

21
Energy Sources Properties
  • Heat Energy
  • Solar Energy
  • Chemical Energy
  • Electrical Energy
  • Mechanical Energy

22
1.HEAT Energy Notes
  • Heat energy is the transfer of thermal energy.
  • As heat energy is added to a substance, the
    temperature increases.
  • When the temperature increases, the molecules
    move faster.
  • The faster the molecules move, the higher the
    temperature.
  • Heat is always transferred from a warmer object
    to a colder object.

23
HEAT Energy
24
HEAT Energy Examples
  • O geothermal energy,
  • O a cup of coffee
  • O a hot spring.

25
HEAT Energy Sources
  • burning wood
  • candle wax
  • the Sun
  • electricity
  • gas

26
2.SOLAR Energy Notes
  • Energy from the SUN, which provides heat light
    energy for Earth.

27
SOLAR Energy Notes
  • Solar cells (panels) can be used to convert solar
    energy to electric energy.
  • Green plants use solar energy during
photosynthesis to produce sugar, which contains
    stored chemical energy.
  • Most of the energy we use on Earth originally
came from the sun fossil fuels.

28
SOLAR Energy Examples
  • Photosynthesis
  • Light
  • Heat

29
SOLAR Energy Source
  • The SUN

30
3.CHEMICAL Energy Notes
  • Chemical energy is energy stored in particles of
    matter.
  • Chemical energy can be released.
  • This energy will remained stored unless acted on
    by an outside source.

31
CHEMICAL Energy Examples/Sources
  • Fuel
  • (energy is released as light or heat when the
    fuel is burned)

32
CHEMICAL Energy Examples/Sources
  • Food
  • (contains stored chemical energy that your body
changes to provide energy for your brain, your
    movements, your growth)

33
CHEMICAL Energy Examples/Sources
  • Batteries have stored chemical energy.

34
4.ELECTRICAL Energy Notes
  • Electrical energy is the energy flowing in an
    electric circuit.
  • Power lines carry energy into your home in the
    form of electricity.

35
ELECTRICAL Energy Examples
36
ELECTRICAL Energy Sources
  • A generator produces hydroelectric energy when a
coil of wire wrapped around an iron core is
    rotated near a magnet.
  • Heating water (by burning fuel) to make steam
  • Steam is pressurized in pipes and shot into a
    turbine causing it to turn.
  • The turbine is connected to a generator that
    turns makes electricity using magnets.

37
ELECTRIC Energy Sources
  • From solar energy in solar panels.
  • From stored chemical energy in batteries.

38
5. MECHANICAL Energy Notes
  • Energy due to an objects motion (kinetic)
    position (potential)

39
6. Law of Conservation of Energy
  • Energy canNOT be created or destroyed
  • Energy can change form
  • The total amount of energy NEVER changes!

40
QUIZ Time
