  • When babies and toddlers needs are met and their

    to their caregivers and learn to trust the world.

Social/Emotional Development
  • When babies become toddlers, 2 things happen
  • Toddlers find out more about the world and
    themselves as individuals
  • Toddlers learn that caregivers cannot always give
    them what they want right away.

Self Awareness
  • Emerges as a separate, possessing self that
    drives independence
  • Concerned about ME and MINE
  • Become aware of
  • How they look
  • What belongs and doesnt belong
  • What they can and cannot do physically
  • Others feelings towards them
  • More aware they can affect others too

  • Mirror Reflections
  • Dressing Up
  • Pretend
  • Photo Albums- Show them pictures
  • Self Esteem
  • Feeling good about yourself and what you can do.

  • Shame vs. Doubt Begins 12-18 Months
    Ends 3 Years
  • Autonomy
  • A form of self-control in which a person seeks to
    do his or her will.
  • Toddlers feelings of being able to do something
    without the help from others- independence
  • Proud of new skills and want to use them
  • But, remember they do not always know how to use
    them ( ex. Spill, break, hurt themselves)

Promoting Toddlers Autonomy
  • Give toddlers safe choices ( 2 choices)
  • Ex. Indoor play vs. Outdoor Play
  • Stand by the choices that you give to toddlers
  • Taking choices back after they choose can
    undermine their sense of autonomy
  • Redirect actions before unsafe or forbidden
    situations occur
  • Allow toddlers to make mistakes
  • Firmly reassure toddler positive comments
  • Stay calm for discipline- but firm reassure
    love

Extending Social Relations
  • Interacting with others socializes children
  • Healthy attachment to caregivers safe base to
    meet and form relationships with others
  • Babysitters, relatives, neighbors, other children
  • More than one caregiver helps children to adjust
    to others and expect differences.

Getting Along with Other Children
  • First interactions are brief may imitate each
    others actions with a toy may talk as they
    play
  • Can be Possessive of toys- Most often, they are
    not quite ready to share
  • Loving relationships with caregivers- toddlers
    seem to be better able to show concern for other
    children.

  • Know they can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell
    but do not always know the body part that does
    them.
  • Have little awareness of their own body weight
  • Feel pain, but not always know what it is
  • Has to see cut or bruise to be able to tell you
    where it is

  • Can detect fear in adults imitate
  • Imagination increases
  • Motor skills allow them to have physical
    reactions to emotions. Ex. Running and hiding.

    displayed by toddlers
  • Appear 2nd year of life
  • Happens when something does not go their way
  • Meant to attract attention
  • Childs anger is not purposefully directed
    towards others until the 3 years
