• Petrozavodsk is the capital of the Republic of
  Karelia. It was founded in 1703 according to the
  decree of Peter the Great.Petrozavodsk is located
  on the western shore of the Onego Lake. The
  population of Petrozavodsk is 265 thousand
  people.
• Petrozavodsk is an industrial, academic, cultural
  and tourist centre of the Russian North-west.

The Kirov Square

• This square hosts three of Petrozavodsk theatres
  the National Theatre, the Russian Drama Theatre,
  the Puppet Theatre.
• There is a bronze monument to Sergey Kirov made
  from the pink granite in the center of the
  square. It was set here in 1936 and since this
  year the square has the name of Kirov.
• Before the Revolution the square had another
  name. Three cathedrals build in the XVIII-XIX
  centuries gave the name to it Sobornaya.

1940. It is the first-rate academic and cultural
institution on the European North of Russia.

Lenin Square

• This square firstly was called Round square or
  Circle. In the Soviet times the bronze monument
  to Peter the Great was replaced with the granite
  constraction of the Lenin monument. The name of
  the square was changed.

The Glory Memorial

• The memorial complex of the Grave of the Unknown
  Soldier with Eternal Flame on its top was opened
  in 1969. On June28,1969 on the day of the25-year
  Anniversary of the liberation of Petrozavodsk
  from the Finnish trops, a flame of Eternal Glory
  was burnt on the grave of the Unknown Soldier.

Peter the Great Monument

• There is a bronze sculpture to Peter the Great in
  a small garden on the embankment of Petrozavodsk.
  This monument was the first one in Petrozavodsk
  and it is considered as one of the best monuments
  to Peter Great

The Onega Embankment

• Lets finally turn to the Lake Onega! The word
  Onega has the meaning big
• in the Finnish language. Only small part of it,
  Petrozavodskaya guba (gulf), is visible from the
  embankment.

• The Onega Embankment is a favorite place of rest
  too both inhabitants and guests of Pettrozavodsk.
  Its grand opening was in 1994.
• The embankment itself is made from the Karelian
  stone granite, diabase, shokshinsky crimson
  quartzite.
• By tradition, city-birthday, sail regatta, and
  ice-figure festival are celebrated on the
  embankment of the Lake Onega.

  enjoy wonderful view.
• Here you will see sculptural compositions which
  were presented to Petrozavodsk.
• Among these sculptures there is Life River,
  Friendship Waves, The Map of the Star Sky over
  Noibrandenburg, Tubingen Picture, Friendship
  Spark, Meeting place, Fishermen,and,finally,WishTr
