Yo-Yo Mas Biography
  • Was born in Paris in 1955.
  • Began his cello studies with his father at age
    four.
  • The family moved to New York where he studied at
the Julliard School and at later at Harvard
University, where he also received an honorary
    doctorate.
  • Gave his first public concert at the age of five.
  • Played at Carnegie Hall at the age of nine.
  • Has recorded over 45 albums.

4
  • Has won 12 Grammy Awards.
  • He and his wife, Jill, have two children,
    Nicholas and Emily.
  • He currently plays a Montanan cello from Venice
made in 1733 and a Davidoff Stradivarius made in
1712 both over 200 years old.
  • Yo-Yo Ma has recorded albums with many other
musicians. Perhaps the most unusual team-up is
with Bobby McFerrin, a vocalist. The album is
called "Hush", which contains classical music by
Vivaldi, Bach, and others, along with some
