  developing osteoporosis.
• It is a disease characterized by low bone mass
  and an enlargement of the joint spaces.
• Osteoporosis leads to an increase in the risk of
  fractures, particularly at the lumbar spine and
  hips.

• There has been a variety of preventative aids and
  treatment options made available for
  osteoporosis. They range from calcium
  supplements to hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
• Recently the FDA approved a new once monthly
  tablet (150mg) to treat and prevent osteoporosis.
  It is called Boniva.

Boniva

• Boniva (ibandronate sodium) has proven efficacy
  with better patient adherence. It has been shown
  to increase bone mineral density by 4.85 within
  the first year of treatment. It also decreases
  bone resorption.
• Side effects from Boniva are similar to other
  bisphosphates which include diarrhea, ulcers,
  dyspepsia, and nausea. These effects were rare
  and in most cases didnt cause patients to stop
  taking the medication.
