Title: Global warming
1Global warming
- S1 Science
- Planet Earth topic
2Its to do with the Earth heating up and if we
dont do something about it were all going to
die.
Humans are causing it.
Its caused by carbon dioxide, which is a very
dangerous gas.
What is global warming?
Global warming is the same thing as the
greenhouse effect. They are bad for the planet.
3Learning outcomes Success criteria
Understand the difference between global warming and the greenhouse effect. You can write definitions for global warming and the greenhouse effect. You can draw a diagram which shows how the greenhouse effect works. You can list the three main greenhouse gases in order of their importance. You can explain whether the greenhouse effect is a good or bad thing.

5FactTheory or Lie?
6Water boils at 100?C
7Plants produce oxygen
8Oxygen is the most common gas in the air
9The universe started with a Big Bang
10The greenhouse effect is a bad thing
11The sun takes 365 days to go around the earth
12The earth is a sphere
13The Earth is getting hotter
14Carbon dioxide is causing the Earth to get hotter
15Burning fossil fuels like petrol produces carbon
dioxide
16Humans are causing global warming
17Global warming will stop if humans stop producing
so much carbon dioxide
18Global Warming andThe Greenhouse Effect
19Definitions
- Global warming
- the increase in the average temperature of the
Earth caused by an increase in the levels of
greenhouse gases, due to human activity. - Although related, is NOT the same thing as the
Greenhouse Effect - The Greenhouse Effect
- is ability of the planet to trap heat, caused by
greenhouse gases absorbing heat energy from the
sun.
As defined by New Scientist magazine
20The Greenhouse Effect
21Most of the heat lost back into space
Greenhouse gases trap some of the heat on Earth
Heat travels from the sun to the Earth
22Facts
- It is totally natural
- It is vitally important it keeps the Earth 20 -
30?C warmer than it would be otherwise - Without it life on Earth would not exist
23- The media confuse the Greenhouse Effect and
Global Warming and often use the terms
interchangeably. - Often they refer only to Global Warming why
actually they mean the Greenhouse Effect.

27Greenhouse Gases
- The most important greenhouse gases (in order)
are - Water vapour (60)
- Carbon dioxide (15)
- Methane
- Nitrous oxide
- Ozone
- Draw a pie chart to show this information,
divided into water vapour, carbon dioxide
and other gases.
