Bridging Gaps

• Underlying educational differences
• Socratic thinking asking why to find problems
  and suggest alternatives text open to critique
  and re-interpretation WEST
• Confucius thinking asking why to find rules
  and follow better text to be internalised and
  memorised EAST

Addressing Plagiarism

• Explicitly teach strategies (e.g. quote,
  paraphrase, summarise, reference)
• Clearly explain penalties for plagiarising
• Apply to first assignment with some leniency and
  clear guidance / help
• Apply to all other assignments with force
• Result appropriately prepared students

Creating Independent Learners

• Understand, accept and work with the dependency
  of Chinese high school students
• Divide tasks and feed them to students
• Gradually increase number of assignments and
  independent learning tasks throughout year
• Assess students on portfolios of their learning,
  emphasising reflection and independence
• Give plenty of help and guidance
• Result more independent learners
