• The press on the Statue of Liberty
• The press of course played a very important role
  in the plan of Bartholdi. The American press
  revealed the statue as a necessity to represent
  American freedom. Thanks to this , the American
  people donated for the building of the
  pedestal. As for the French people, they donated
  for the building of the statue, the list of the
  donors stretched out but unfortunately the
  necessary sum was not obtained.
• It is indeed thanks to the action of Joseph
  Pulitzer, boss of "Le Monde", that the American
  people discovered the statue.
• Joseph Pulitzer published grotesque drawings,
  emotional letters of widows, retired men and
  immigrants. More than 100.000 were harvested in
  five months.
• The press related as a series the wonderful
  building of this colossal statue, taking in each
  of the stages of its birth pose of the first
  rivet, the workshop in Paris, exhibition of some
  parts of the statue in France and in America,
  official delivery in the United States, taking
  down and transfer by boat, arrival at New York,
  the final unveiling.

Now, a step backwards The Statue of
LibertyThe Statue of Liberty is located in New
York in the United States, its not far from New
jersey.

• Its history
  It is Gustave Eiffel who was hired
  to accomplish the massive metallic pylon which
  supports the Statue, as well as the internal
  secondary skeleton which allows the brass "skin"
  of the statue to take after itself in upright
  position.
  It was inaugurated in 1886, The statue
  original name was Liberty enlightening the
  world.
• They chose to put the Statue here because it was
  the first vision of the United States fir many
  immigrants. After a long crossing of the Atlantic
  ocean. As for architecture, the statue recalls
  the giant of Rhode that was one of the seven
  marvels of the ancient world. It is one of the
  principal national monuments which are managed by
  the national park service.
• The Statue of Liberty is a present from France to
  the United States that was offered in 1886 to
  celebrate the centenary of American independence
  and to symbolize the relationships between the
  two nations.

• Characteristics of the Statue of Liberty
• The statue represent a women who is standing,
  wearing a dress and a crown that is composed by
  seven points that represent the seven continents.
  Arctic, Antarctic, Atlantic north and south,
  north Pacific and south and Indian) It is holding
  a torch in its right hand which represents the
  Lights. The Lights marked the domain of ideas and
  literature by their taking a new look (founded on
  " lit reason ") on the human being and on the
  idea of freedom.
• The bar evokes the law. When they speak about
  the statue of freedom, they speak about " broken
  shackles".

Americans preference for old immigration rather
than new immigration reflected a sudden rise in
conservatism. Many Americans subsequently became
unhappy with this development. They came to the
new urban America, where disease, overcrowding
and crime festered. As a result, relations became
openly hostile, with many Americans becoming
anti-immigrant, fearing the customs, religion,
and poverty of the new immigrants, considering
them less desirable than old immigrants. This
perceived difference did not actually exist the
new immigrants, although seeming different,
brought about the same sort of values as old ones
did.

• How the "old immigrants" and the "new immigrants"
  were opposed and why?
  
• The term Old Immigrant was used for someone who
  came to the United States from Northern or
  Western Europe during the first wave of
  immigration in the history of the independent US
  (1776-1890). Many of the Old Immigrants were
  attracted to America because of the availability
  of free land, and the promise of personal or
  religious freedom. New immigration was a term
  from the late 1880s when there were many
  immigrants coming from southern and eastern
  Europe.

Lazarus is graven on a tablet within the
pedestral on which the statue stands.
