necessity of the job in the restaurant industry.
Be careful , improper use can can lead to injury
    or even death.
  • There are several steps restaurant employees can
take to reduce the risks involved when working
    with hazardous chemicals.

4
Potential Chemical Hazards
  • Soaps and detergents
  • Skin burns
  • Corrosive irritation to eyes, respiratory tract
    and skin
  • Can cause allergic reactions, sometimes severe
  • Irritated and broken skin can become more easily
    infected

5
Potential Chemical Hazards
  • Chlorine, used as a disinfectant in dishwashing
and ammonia, commonly used as a cleaning agent
  • Burns
  • Skin allergy
  • Can cause respiratory, skin, nose and eye
irritation and even death if combined
  • Gas is severe irritant

6
Potential Chemical Hazards
  • Degreasers and solvents
  • Eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation
  • Headaches, nausea and dizziness
  • Caustic chemicals found in oven and drain
    cleaners
  • Can result skin burns
  • Eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation
  • Dermatitis from repeated contact

7
Potential Chemical Hazards
  • Insecticides used for pest control in restaurants
  • Can cause respiratory, eye, and skin irritation,
as well as possible death if ingested
  • Latex gloves
  • Can cause allergic reaction in some workers
  • CO2 used to put fizz in fountain drinks is an
    odorless and colorless gas
  • Can cause death if inhaled

  • Ensure that there is good ventilation in areas
    where the chemicals are used
  • Never combine chemicals
  • Always use personal protective equipment, such as
    gloves, goggles or splash aprons

10
How to Protect Yourself

    diagnosed with a latex allergy
  • Disposable gloves are available in a variety of
    materials

    them thoroughly
  • Wash your hands and face frequently when handling
    chemicals

11
How to Protect Yourself

    risk of spills
  • Store non-compatible chemicals separately, such
    as chlorine and ammonia
  • Know the location of emergency eye wash stations,
fire extinguishers and first aid kits
  • Immediately report any damage to CO2 tanks to
    management
  • NEVER work with chemicals until properly trained

12
Material Safety Data Sheets
  • What to look for on the MSDS sheet

Check for health hazards and First Aid procedures
Check for recommended personal protective
equipment and precautions
Check for recommended procedures if a spill
occurs and potential fire and explosion hazards
Check for possible reaction to other chemicals
and products
13
First Aid
  • Know the emergency procedures for every chemical
    you use
  • If a chemical accident occurs
  • Immediately check and follow the First Aid
    requirements on the MSDS sheet
  • For a chemical burn on the skin
  • Remove the cause of the burn by rinsing the
affected area under cool water for 20 minutes or
    more
  • Remove contaminated jewelry or clothing
  • Call emergency services
