Pre-reading questions
  • Have you ever tried to write a poem?

15
How to scan a poem?Mothers Love
  • There is no love, like a mother's love,no
    stronger bond on earth...
  • like the precious bond that comes from God,to a
    mother, when she gives birth.
  • A mother's love is forever strong,never changing
for all time...and when her children need her
    most,a mother's love will shine.

16
  • God bless these special mothers,God bless them
every one...for all the tears and heartache, and
for the special work they've done.
  • When her days on earth are over,a mother's love
    lives on...through many generations,with God's
    blessings on each one.

17
  • Be thankful for our mothers, for they love
with a higher love...from the power God has
given, and the strength from up above.

the deathbed whereon it must expire,Consumed

perceivest, which makes thy love more strong,To
love that well which thou must leave ere long.

Structure analysis of the Text (p146)
  • In order to highlight the image of the father,
the author purposely deviates from the theme in
the middle and describes the fathers indignation
toward the haughty actress. This event reflects
the fathers personality, he is a person strict
in his work and with his company men, and he is
rigid and rigorous in his manner.

54
Questions for comprehension
  • 1.Why was his mothers attitude to Budds poem
    positive and affirmative?
  • She poured out her welcome praise and cried
that she had not expected that her son had such a
talent for poetry writing. She encouraged the son
    to keep on writing.

55
  • 2. How did his father respond to the poem?
  • Quite beyond his expectation, his father at
first ignored his poem and then, when he did
notice it and read it, he dropped the poem back
and declared that it is lousy, which hurt Budd
    severely.

56
  • 3. What was his fathers response to Budds poem?
How was that different from his mothers?
  • Unlike his mother, his father denounced the
poem as lousy and very rudely declared that he
had the right to tear apart his stuff because he
thought it was lousy. This was quite beyond
Budds expectation. While his mother showed her
understanding and support to the son, his father
compared the sons first try in poetry to the
work of his colleagues in the studio, which were,
to him, both lousy and thus wasted his time and
    money in reading such stuff.

57
  • 4. What kind of man was his father?
  • He was strict in his work, but seemed too
rough and tough on his colleagues. Rigorous and
merciless, his father showed a love to the son
which was quite different from his mother. His
love was a kind of strength or force, which
called Budds attention to his work constantly
and urged him to review and to improve.

58
  • Can you describe the mothers love?
  • How is the fathers love?
  • Which kind of love is important to the childrens
growth, the mothers or the fathers?
  • How does your mother show her love to you?
  • How about your father? Is he as strict as the
father we learnt in the text? How do you feel
    about this kind of love?

108
The Opposing Forces of Love in My Life
  • Like the majority of the children, the opposing
forces of love accompany my growth.
  • There is no doubt that mothers love is the most
selfless one in the world. Mother usually treats
their children as a part of themselves. In my
memory, mother never reproaches me or rebukes me,
says nothing of beat. Each time when I make some
mistakes, mother will forgive me soon and tell me
not to do that with a smile. Even when I make a
blunder, mother reprimands me . she will use some
instructive stories to help me make a clear
    distinction between right and wrong.

109
  • At one time, I burned a hole in her favorite
skirt with incaution. I dared no to tell the
truth to my mother. When mother found it,she told
me a story of Washington cut down the cherry
trees, winch his father liked best, and how he
took courage to admit his mistakes After
listening to this story,I felt very ashamed, and
told my mother the truth tat it was I who burned
her skirt. Unexpectedly, mother didnt blame me
for doing that instead she praised me for
admitting my mistakes on my own. From then on,I
realized the importance of honesty and never made
the same mistake. I enjoyed my mothers
    unconditional,gentle and tender love.

110
  • In contrast to my loving mother, my father is a
rather rational person. He is discreet in speech
and manner. Unlike my mother, he seldom speaks
highly of me. I have been eager to know why my
father isnt satisfied with me. Each time when I
was awarded as three excellences student or
granted with scholarships. my mother poured out
her welcome praises, he just asked me not to be
proud and pointed out my shortcomings. his
reaction made me frustrated. My father is very
responsible for his work. .He often works late at
night, and he tries his best to accomplish his
job. From him, I learn that I should be
responsible for my job and take the things
    seriously.

111
  • I need the mother force, the loving force which
encourage me when I face up with difficulties and
challenges and from which my inspiration of
creation comes and yet mothers love is not
incomplete, without the father force to temper my
rampant self-conceit with his hard-headed and
realistic appraisal of myself. What I should do
now is to navigate my own craft and follow the
    right course.
