Title: APP, TRICs and Datalogging

1
APP, TRICs and Datalogging
  • Sam Holyman
  • Supported by
  • Kayan Parker and Mumtaz Quayum

2
Objectives
  • To revisit TRICs
  • To understand the role of APP in science
    assessment
  • To understand the benefits and drawbacks of using
    dataloggers in classroom
  • To set up and use data loggers
  • To familiarise Earth Science APP.

What is APP (Assessing Pupils Progress)?
  • A national approach to assessment that equips
teachers to make judgments on pupils progress.
  • QCA and National Strategies have developed it.
  • APP helps teachers to fine-tune their
understanding of pupils needs and tailor their
    planning and teaching accordingly.

APP at Swanshurst
  • APP should be achieved through day-to-day
    interactions, observations and ongoing assessment
teachers see evidence of what pupils understand
    and can do.
  • APP is most effective when it draws on a broad
range of evidence that shows what pupils can do
    independently.
  • Embedded into KS3 curriculum often as a homework
    task.

6
What is a datalogger?
  • A sensor
  • A method of recording the data.

7
Set up the data logger
  • Log onto the computer.
  • Take a temperature probe and put it into the USB
    drive.
  • Start, programmes, Vernier Software, LoggerPro
    3.4.2.

8
Setting up and using a datalogger
  • Half fill a beaker with ice.
  • Put the probe into the liquid.
  • Start collecting the data.
  • Add a spatula of salt.
  • Observe for 1 minute.
  • Stop collecting the data and autoscale.
  • Print your graph.

9
Issues arising from the use of dataloggers
  • Confidence
  • Equipment
  • Cost
  • Time
  • Real time data
  • No measurement skills are needed
  • Links different ways of displaying data with the
    experiment
  • Remote sensing
  • Links with other curriculum areas e.g.
    mathematics, IT
