SES Applies for Green School RecertificationBy
Michele HamptonThe Maryland Green School
Awards Program is a framework for a holistic,
integrated approach to authentic learning that
incorporates local environmental issue
investigation and professional development with
environmental best management practices and
community stewardship. Mrs. Embert and Mrs.
Valenti are coordinating activities in order to
acquire Green School status for SES. Currently,
students are participating in "No Waste
Wednesdays" by observing the amount of food that
they throw away each day. During the first week,
SES students reduced the amount of waste by four
pounds, and continue to decrease the amount of
waste at the rate of two pounds per week. SES
students started this project by weighing the
fourth grade lunches and soon will extend this to
the other grades. They are making efforts to
reduce the amount of waste. Good luck to SES
eagles, and I hope they accomplish their goals
and have a noteworthy learning experience. SES
has applied for Green School Recertification.

Kindergarten is looking forward to many great
activities in the next few weeks . Our trip to
see Cinderella is on May 17, we pick strawberries
on May 21 and there are special events planned
for June 7. We are also planning a pet show (with
stuffed animals) in May. Watch your child's
folder for more details about these events .
Remember to read with your child and ask detailed
questions about the story! The Kindergarten
Team
May and June will be busy months for us! Please
check your childs communication folder for
upcoming events such as Field Day, Field trip
information, end of year activities etc. There
will be forms that need to be signed and
returned. A field trip has been planned for
Friday, June 7, 2013. Second grade will be going
to The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St.
Michaels to learn about the bay environment.
This is a change from our original date, due to
several factors. It will be an extended day trip
with a return time of 330. We will be able to
have 9 chaperones (ride the bus) per class. We
will also have our end of year picnic and our
awards ceremony on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, so
save the date. We will be spending most of the
day at the Sudlersville Park. You know we are
continuing with a rigorous academic routine from
now until the end of the year. Our Reading
Literacy Block is going well. Most of our
students continue making steady gains. Math
units will incorporate geometry, money, time,
measurement and graphing. In Science, we will be
completing a unit on the Environment and
beginning our last unit on Life Science. Writing
will continue to be a focus for the rest of the
year. Please continue reading and completing
reading logs each night and helping your child
with his or her homework.
What happened to spring? We have been very busy
in Pre-k learning about how living things and
their environment grow and change over time.
They have been reviewing numbers 0-10,
measurement, patterns, and letters of the
alphabet and their sounds. We will bring closure
to the unit Growing and Changing by taking a
field trip to Godfrey's Farm to pick strawberries
on Friday, May 17th. The children are very
excited about going to the farm. Our final unit
in Pre-K will be about getting ready for
Kindergarten. The children will continue to work
on letter identification (uppercase and
lowercase) by name and by sound. In math, they
will explore the use and the meaning of currency
and coins. In science, they will continue
to identify and describe bugs. The Pre-k field
day will be Friday, May 24th. In addition, our
End of the Year Picnic/ Blue Sky Puppet Show
sponsored by The Judy Center will be at SES on
Friday, June 7th. Please be on the look out for
more information which will be sent at a later
date. A huge thanks to all the parents in the
A.M. and P.M. classes for all of your help this
year. Your Pre-K Team
Grade 1 News
The end of the school year is quickly
approaching. For the remainder of the year, in
math, we will cover time, measurement, geometry
and fractions. These are very important topics.
Please continue to do homework nightly. Please

Health Room
Our grills will soon be warming up and we will
be getting together with our families and friends
for cookouts. Did you know that there are about
76 million people a year in the United States who
develop a food borne illness? A food borne
illness is most often caused by the harmful
bacteria Escherichia coli which is found in raw
and undercooked meat and poultry. Salmonella can
be found in meats as well as eggs, dairy
products, fish, vegetables and fruit. The ten
most riskiest foods are leafy lettuce, greens,
tomatoes, sprouts, potatoes, berries, cheese, ice
cream, eggs, tuna, and oysters. The following
steps will help you handle your food safely to
decrease your risk of a food borne illness Cook
your meat, poultry, and eggs thoroughly and use
your meat thermometer. This will kill harmful
bacteria. Wash your produce well under running
water. Dont cross contaminate your foods.
Clean all of your surfaces, cutting boards, and
utensils with hot soapy water. Dont forget to
wash your hands. Refrigerate leftovers. Food
should not be left out of the refrigerator for
more than 2 hours. If the room temperature is
90F or more it needs to be refrigerated within
an hour. Bacteria can multiply rapidly if it is
not well handled. Check to see that your
refrigerator is set _at_ 40F or below and the
freezer is 0F or below. Take the time to
prepare your food safely and enjoy your cookout!
We have included a suggestion box in the main
office. Parents who wish to leave a suggestion
may do so. Thank you for your help!

STEM Night and the Science Fair Hopefully
a paper came home to you about the Science Fair
on May 20th. I know we have many budding
scientists here at SES! Participation is
optional, yet we can help you along the way if
you are interested. Please let me know if you
have any questions or would like another copy of
the instructions. Students will have the
opportunity to share their project during our
STEM night on May 20th at 530. Dinner will be
provided, and parents and children will
participate in STEM activities and view the
Science Fair projects. It should be a great
night, and I hope to see all our families there,
whether or not you participate in the Science
Fair!
The Fabulous Chinese Acrobats By Michele
Hampton On May 6th, The Chinese Acrobats are
scheduled to perform for the Sudlersville
Elementary School students. Students will see
contortions, plate spinning, foot juggling,
Chinese yo-yo, and group acrobats. An
interpreter will be with the performers to enrich
with facts about Chinese culture and customs.
This assembly is supported by the SES PTA.
Parents are welcome to attend.

Math Matters
Clip and save. Cut out grocery store coupons and
tell how much money is saved with coins. For
example, if you save 20 cents on detergent, say 2
dimes. Ask your child what could be purchased
using the savings from the coupon. A pack of gum?
A pencil? How much money could be saved with 3,
4, or 5 coupons? How could that money be counted
out in coins and bills? What could be purchased
with those savings? A pack of notebook paper? A
magazine? How much money could be saved with
coupons for a week's worth of groceries? How
would that money be counted out? What could be
purchased with those savings? A book? A movie
ticket? What percentage of the original price is
the coupon worth? Count the ways. How many ways
can you make 10 cents, 25 cents, 30 cents, 40
cents, or 50 cents? You can help your child add
the coins in various ways to get different
answers. Tracking Time with TV While watching
television, make a chart showing how much time in
every hour is used for commercials compared to
how much time is used for the actual show. Do
this for every half-hour of television you watch.
Then make a bar or pie chart showing the two
amounts. Time the minutes carefully. Tracking
Time in your Day Together with your child, keep
track of how he or she spends time in one 24-hour
period time spent sleeping, eating, playing,
reading, and going to school. Measure a strip of
paper that is 24 inches long. Let each inch
represent 1 hour. Color in the number of hours
for each activity, using a different color for
each activity. When finished, make the strip into
a circle and place it on a blank piece of paper.
Trace around the circle. Then make lines from the
center of the
circle to the end of each color. Your child has
just made a circle (pie) chart of how he or she
spends 24 hours. Compare this with how other
people in your family spend their time. During
summer vacations, on rainy days, while waiting at
the doctor's office, or on a stroll through the
neighborhood, learning never ends. Your children
can explore some fascinating mathematical
possibilities in the world around them every day.
For instance, math can be found outdoors in
nature look for symmetry in leaves count the
number, sizes, and kinds of trees on your street
and look at the various shapes and patterns of
blooming flowers. Children will be learning math
and enjoying it too!
MATH MATTERS for the summer Your home is
full of opportunities to explore math with your
child and, at the same time, build his or her
self-confidence and understanding of mathematical
ideas. This is a chance for you and your child to
"talk math" that is, to communicate about math
while discovering relationships between numbers.
Being able to describe mathematical patterns and
relationships, such as those between "addition
and subtraction" or "odd and even numbers," is
important to later success in math. Students
need practice in order to maintain their math
skills during the summer break. Be sure to talk
about numbers and math in your daily activities.
Children can count coins, tell time, add up costs
and calculate change. They can practice their
facts using math card games like Top It. Coin
clues. Ask your child to gather some change in
his or her hand without showing what it is. Start
with amounts of 25 cents or less (for
first-graders, you can start with pennies and
nickels). Ask your child to tell you how much
money and how many coins there are. Guess which
coins are being held. For example, "I have 17
cents and 5 coins. What coins do I have?" (3
nickels and 2 pennies).
Reading
We had 132 students in grades PreK-4 meet their
reading goal for quarter 3. We need the support
of all parents to help their children become
successful readers. Please see that you child
reads each day and completes their reading
logs. They only need to complete 4 reading logs
each week, but should still read every day.
Reading success is a team effort! Help you
child to reach their reading goal for quarter 4.
Make reading fun! Take your child to the
library to check out books that interest them.
The librarian can help you to find books that
your child can read. Don't forget the
importance of reading to your child. Scan the
words with your finger as you read to your child
so that they can follow along. Feel free to
contact me if you have any questions. Barbara

SES 2013 Earth Day With the support of teachers,
parents, and community volunteers, more than 300
students at Sudlersville Elementary School
explored environmental issues of the Chesapeake
Bay and engaged in community service on Earth
Day, April 22. Students gained a deeper
understanding of environmental stewardship and
how important it is to care for the environment
of Queen Annes County. After a rousing
assembly led by Sultana, Inc., Vice President
Chris Cerino who had the students involved in a
variety of learning activities put to music,
students attended workshops that were designed to
enrich the students instructional program.
Student journals were used to record students
responses to their hands-on activities. The

Sleep and School Performance When you get too
little sleep on a regular basis, a condition
known as sleep deprivation can occur, causing you
to shortchange yourself on a very important
aspect of life. Everyone knows that food and
water are essential to life. Getting enough sleep
is just as important. Yes, life is hectic and
juggling time and schedules can be extremely
difficult. The responsibilities of going to
school, working, recreating and enjoying a
satisfying social life all cut into the time you
have to sleep. Interestingly enough, without the
proper amount of sleep, each category mentioned
will suffer. Schools and Communities Real Life
