Taft-Hartley Act (1947)
  • The Labor-Management Relations Act, commonly
    known as the Taft-Hartley Act, is a United States
    federal law that greatly restricts the activities
    and power of labor unions. The Act, still largely
    in effect, was passed over U.S. President Harry
    S. Truman, in 1947. Among other things, it
    outlawed the closed shop (union-only work place).

    hereby declared to be the policy of the President
    that there shall be equality of treatment and
    opportunity for all persons in the armed services
    without regard to race, color, religion, or
    national origin."
