Sun Transit Outage
During sun transit periods, FOX splits the AB
radios to different satellites, thus assuring a
network signal continuity at all times. We
arrange for the B-radio to be transited first. 15
mins later, the A-radio is transited. Start the
transits with the A radio and A DCM switched to
air. NOTE Operator intervention is required to
remain on air through these transits. If you are
able to switch your B-chain (B-radio and B-DCM)
to air, see slide 7. If not, see slide 10 for an
alternative.

  • Normal State
  • Under normal conditions, the ROSA GUI should look
    like those displayed below
  • In the following slides we will discuss
    step-by-step how the splicer will react to the
    sun transit outage
  • NOTE Make sure the ROSA GUI is available and
    running prior to the start of FOX Network
    operations. See the FOX Operational Guide,
    available on the FOX Splicer Website
    (http//www.hdrollout.com ) to setup and start
    the ROSA GUI

  • When the 1st satellite is affected by the sun,
    the B Radio output will be interrupted
  • This will impact DCM B, but DCM A is unaffected.
    Further, you will see the following on the ROSA
    GUI
  • Net B turns red
  • DCM AB both turn red
  • Both Network and Local tallies light
    simultaneously (DCM A is now on Network, and DCM
    B failed over to Local)
  • At this point, do nothing and wait until the sun
    has passed and Receiver B recovers

  • FOX Receiver B recovers
  • Network B feed will come back causing
  • Net B to turn back to green
  • DCM A to turn back to normal
  • DCM B to turn yellow
  • Then
  • Go to Station Engineer GUI and double-click the
    Normalize DCM B button
  • And then Splice to Network
  • If the station is configured appropriately,
    select B-radio and B-DCM to air before next
    transit starts - IF NOT, SEE SLIDE 10 FOR AN
    ALTERNATIVE METHOD

  • When the 2nd satellite is affected by the sun,
    the A Radio output will be interrupted
  • This will impact DCM A, but DCM B is unaffected.
    Further, you will see the following on the ROSA
    GUI
  • Net A turns red
  • DCM AB both turn red
  • Both Network and Local tallies light
    simultaneously (DCM B is now on Network, and DCM
    A failed over to Local)
  • NOTE The splicer output will failover to Local
    during this transit
  • Wait 5-7 seconds, then trigger Splice to Network.
    This will restore the feed.

  • The sun has passed, and FOX Receiver A recovers
  • Network A feed will come back causing
  • Net A to turn back to green
  • DCM B to turn back to normal
  • DCM A to turn yellow
  • Then
  • Go to Station Engineer GUI and double-click the
    Normalize DCM A button

  • Other Possible Issues
  • Situations may arise where the outage can cause
    other issues or failures, in this case call the
    TOC (310-369-6116)
  • Crossover A or B switch tripped (Output Status
    tally orange)
  • Tx A or B tripped (Output Status tally red)
  • DCM A or B turns yellow or red, and will not
    normalize
