Ohmic Test Methods
  • Conductance
  • A low AC voltage signal is impressed across the
    battery terminals and the AC current response is
    measured. The conductance (acceptance) is the
    ratio of the AC test current impressed on the
    circuit to the AC voltage
  • DC Resistance
  • Short duration DC load on the cell/unit to
    measure step change in current and voltage. By
    dividing the change in voltage by the change in
    current, a DC resistance is calculated using
    Ohms Law
  • Impedance
  • Performed by sending an AC current of a known
    frequency and amplitude, across the cell/unit and
    measuring the AC voltage drop. Compute the
    resulting impedance using Ohms Law

What Is Conductance?
  • Conductance is a measurement of the batteries
    electronic and ionic components to determine how
    much power the battery can supply
  • As the batteries age, their ability to deliver
    power decreases along with conductance
  • Accurate correlation to discharge testing
  • Reliable indication of battery state-of-health
  • Conductance can identify most battery failures
    before they happen
  • Conductance is a passive, quick, safe, easy and
    reliable way to determine a batterys relative
    condition or state of health

How Conductance Is Measured
  • A low A/C voltage signal is impressed across the
    battery terminals (VAC)
  • The A/C Current (IAC) response is measured
  • Conductance (G) is the ratio of the AC test
    current impressed on the circuit to the AC
    voltage.
  • Using Ohms Law G IAC/VAC
  • Significant changes in the conductance value
    typically indicate a significant change in the
    performance of a cell.
  • Change in ohmic values in excess of 20 loss
    should be considered significant.

  • Battery must be fully charged for test data to be

  • Dangerous potential for heat and sparks. Serious
    injury and damage can occur if battery is faulty.
  • Battery needs to be recharged after each test
  • Battery is not available to support network for
    up to 24 hours during test
  • Capacity testers are cumbersome and costly
