  • should be performed with CONTROL
    and the minimum effort

SKILL
  • Skills can be BASIC or COMPLEX
  • BASIC SKILLS simple things like
    throwing or jumping
  • transferable between many
    different activities
  • should be thoroughly
    learnt before moving onto COMPLEX
    SKILLS

4
SKILL
  • Skills can be BASIC or COMPLEX
  • COMPLEX SKILLS- need a higher level of
    coordination and control
  • most are specific
to one sport and are usually
    non-transferable
  • they require more practice
  • to master and have more
    scope for improvement

5
SKILL
  • SKILLS can be
  • CLOSED
    OPEN or somewhere in
    between
  • CLOSED SKILLS - are not affected by
    external factors
  • you usually have to make the

SKILL

9
SKILL
  • INFORMATION PROCESSING

All the information your brain receives. What
your senses see, hear and feel.
INPUT
DECISION MAKING
This is where your brain sorts out all the
information it receives from your senses and
decides what action to take.
OUTPUT
This is the actual action you have carried out.
The result of your actions. How it felt, how
successful was the action which now adds to the
input for any future actions
FEEDBACK

SKILL
  • Qualities of a SKILLED PERFORMER
  • Always seems to have plenty of time.
  • Makes difficult skills look easy.
  • Has a high success rate when performing skills.
  • Avoids injury through skilful body movement.

SKILL
  • LEARNING NEW SKILLS -PRACTICE
  • Practice makes permanent.
  • WHOLE The skill is learned by repeating the
full action throughout without any pauses.
  • PART Requires the skill to be broken down into
parts and practiced as separate skills.
  • FIXED Practiced under the same conditions every
    time. Not changed with environment.
  • VARIED Open skills practiced in conditions that
vary that matches the changing situations of the
    game.

12
SKILL
  • LEARNING NEW SKILLS
  • Different forms of Instruction
  • Guidance
  • Verbal - This is where instructions
are given verbally by someone such
    as a coach.
  • Visual - The skill is seen either on
    video or being
  • performed by another person.
  • Manual - The skill is performed with
    the assistance
  • of the coach manually helping the
    performer
  • through the actions of
    the skill.

13
SKILL
  • MOTIVATION
  • ( what drives you on / your desire to succeed)
  • Intrinsic Motivation Comes from inside you. You
play the sport for enjoyment and
because you want to do well in the
sport not for what you can get out
    of it.
  • Extrinsic Motivation You are motivated by
    external factors such as financial
    rewards, winning cups
    or for extra publicity.

14
SKILL
  • GOAL SETTING
  • Goal Setting means giving yourself
    targets
    that you want to reach.
  • Short Term Goals are those that you can reach
  • quite quickly and are steps on
    the way towards long
    term goals.
  • Long Term Goals are those that are set
to achieve in the long term future.
  • Often these goals are achieved through
success with lots of short term
    goals along the way.

15
SKILL
  • GOAL SETTING ( S.M.A.R.T.E.R. )
  • S SPECIFIC say exactly what you want to
    achieve.
  • M MEASURABLE you can see if you have achieved
    it or not
  • A AGREED you should agree targets with your
    coach.
  • R - REALISTIC goals should be within your
    reach.
  • T TIME PHASED a time needs to be set to
    achieve your goal.
  • E EXCITING an exciting goal will keep your
    motivation up.
  • R RECORDED you keep records to check on your
    progress

16
SKILL
  • Feedback.
  • Knowing how successful or not we have been in
performing a skill in sport is important because
we use that information to analyse our past
performance and improve future performance. There
    are 2 types of feedback.
  • Knowledge of Performance (KP) Performance
    rather than result
  • Knowledge of Results (KR) Outcome of
    performance.

17
SKILL
  • Phases of skill learning.
  • Learning a new skill takes time. There are 3
phases in the process which are sometimes linked
    and not separate.
  • COGNITIVE very early stage. Need to get the
technique right. Often make mistakes. We find it
hard to correct ourselves because we dont yet
know what we are supposed to be doing.
  • ASSOCIATIVE in this phase we make less errors
and performance improves a lot. We gain the
awareness and knowledge to begin to correct
ourselves. Practice is essential in this phase.
  • AUTONOMOUS techniques become automatic, in
tennis for example we dont have to concentrate
all our brain on the shot itself but can decide
where to play the shot in relation to our
opponent, state of the game, weather conditions,
    etc.
