3What is a file?
A file is an item that contains informationfor
example, text or pictures or music.
4Files are represented by icons.
5What is a folder?
- A folder is a container you can use to store
files in. - If you had thousands of papers on your desk, you
would like to store them in a folder. On your
computer, folders work the same way and store the
files.

8- Folders can also store other folders.
- A folder within a folder is usually called
a subfolder. - You can create any number of subfolders, and each
can hold any number of files and additional
subfolders.
9To open the Documents, Pictures, or Music
libraries, click the Start button , and
then click Documents, Pictures, or Music.

- Documents library. Use this library to organize
and arrange word-processing documents,
spreadsheets, presentations, and other
text-related files. - Pictures library. Use this library to organize
and arrange your digital pictures, whether you
get them from your camera, scanner, or in e-mail
from other people. - Music library. Use this library to organize and
arrange your digital music, such as songs. - Videos library. Use this library to organize and
arrange your videos, such as clips from your
digital camera or camcorder, or video files that
you download from the Internet.
12Finding files
- use the search box to find your file. Press the
start button to get this dialog.
13Renaming a file right click the folder and
select the rename option
14Create a new folder
Press the right mouse button in the window and
menu will appear. Go to new, in that submenu,
click to folder.
15Copying and moving files and folders
- copy and move files using a method called drag
and drop. - Select the folder by left click of mouse.
- Open the folder by double click of mouse
- Start by opening the folder that contains the
file or folder you want to move. - open the folder where you want to move it to in a
different window. - drag the file or folder from the first folder to
the second folder.
16Removing a file
- When you no longer need a file, you can remove it
from your computer - To delete a file, open the folder or library that
contains the file, and then select the file. - Press Delete on your keyboard and then, in
the Delete File dialog box, click Yes.

- When you open a folder or library, you can change
how the files look in the window. - For example, you might prefer larger (or smaller)
icons or a view that lets you see different kinds
of information about each file.

19On the Desktop, Double click on the computer
20What is a c
- C drive as a large File Cabinet drawer.
- Think of the directories as the dividers in that
drawer i.e. (bills, receipts, insurance, etc) - Think of the sub folders in the directory as file
folders within/behind the dividers in the file
drawer.

- Go to start , then right click on start.

A file format is a standard way that information
is encoded for storage in a computer file.

29How different files are identified? through
their extensions
- Filename such as tutorial.txt has .txt extension.
- Extensions are three letters or numbers that
appear at the end of a file name and indicate
what type of file it is. What the file is used
for.
