Title: Rehabilitation

1
Rehabilitation
  • MAINTAINING CARDIORESPIRATORY FITNESS DURING REHAB

2
Why cardio fitness
  • During injury time , the athlete is forced to
miss training time , and thus levels of cardio
    fitness decrease rapidly
  • Cardio respiratory endurance by definition is the
ability to perform whole body activities for
extended periods of time without undue fatigue

3
MAXIMAL AEROBIC CAPACITY
  • Is an inherited characteristic
  • Is based on percentage of slow twitch to fast
    twitch muscle fibres
  • The greater the ratio of slow to fast, the
greater the potential for higher max VO2

4
TECHNIQUES FOR MAINTAINING CR ENDURANCE
  • Are 4 general classifications of CR training
  • 1. continuous
  • 2. interval
  • 3. fartlek
  • 4. circuits

5
TECHNIQUES FOR MAINTAINING CR ENDURANCE
  • 1. continuous training
  • F (frequency) 3-6xs/week
  • I (intensity) monitor HR
  • Karvonen method Target HR
  • rHR (maxHR rHR)
  • or Rate of perceived exertion (RPE) b/t 6-20
  • T (type) must be aerobic, whole body
  • T (time) 20-60 minutes

6
TECHNIQUES FOR MAINTAINING CR ENDURANCE
  • 2. interval training
  • Involves periods of work and rest/active recovery
  • Tends to be more sport specific
  • Use sets and reps
  • i.e. 4 x 60 on, 2 off
  • 10 x 400m on, 200m off

7
TECHNIQUES FOR MAINTAINING CR ENDURANCE
  • 3. fartlek training
  • Swedish word for speed play
  • Tends to be less boring because terrain and
    intervals change

8
TECHNIQUES FOR MAINTAINING CR ENDURANCE
  • 4. Circuits
  • Combines continuous training and weight training
  • Very common in military fitness regimes

9
TECHNIQUES FOR MAINTAINING CARDIORESPIRATORY
FITNESS
  • Must Consider
  • Nature of injury and techniques available as a
    result of injury
  • Upper vs. Lower extremity injury
  • Match fitness
  • Engagement of functional activities specific to
    sport to maintain fitness

10
TECHNIQUES FOR MAINTAINING CARDIORESPIRATORY
FITNESS
  • FITT Principle
  • Frequency
  • Intensity
  • Type (mode)
  • Time (duration)
  • Frequency
  • 3x/week minimum to 6x/week
  • Must have at least 1 rest day
